I go with Shell every chance I get, mainly because Exxon/Mobile treats the environment like it's a redheaded stepchild. I refuse to buy a clubbed baby seal with every fill-up. But i'm a little environmentally friendly

Other than that, Shell has treated me very well. BP is my second choice

+1 again on Chevron. They are considered "top tier" gas and were the first to every gain that status. Basically they defined the catagory. Chevron fuel is also used to test vehicles by all the major US manufactures because of the quality. Shell comes in second but that's only reciently with their addition of "V-Power" which is their additive version of Techron. Techron though is still very unique and is only used by Chevron who developed the additive. Take a look at http://www.toptiergas.com/retailers.html to see who sells the best gasoline. You'll notice that Chevron dominates the catagory for the most part. Texaco is Chevron gasoline so if you don't have Chevron in your area then Texaco is the best choice.

In the 80's my parents used to use Shell however several of the stations in my area didn't keep their tanks up very well and there were several incidents of water getting into the gas before being pumped into your tank. The stopped using Shell and never turned back even after legislation was changed here in California making tank maintenance much more strick.

Exxon/Mobile doesn't use any real additives and is pretty much just plain old gasoline. That's why they don't make the list of Top Tier. Their gas is considered "dirty" as it doesn't do much to keep your engine and valves nice and clean like top tier fuels do.

Take a look at this link as well for Chevron fuel http://www.chevron.com/products/ourfuels/chevwtech/

Here's yet another link to read: http://www.caranddriver.com/features...olumn/(page)/1

And another link: http://www.gm.com/corporate/responsi...gas_050906.jsp

All of these are linked in on the Chevron page under TOP TIER

By the way.. unless you're sucking fumes.. never buy gas from an AM/PM or mom/pop type place. They basically buy the fuel from whomever will sell it to them at the lowest price HOWEVER they contain zero additives and in some cases may just barely meet the minimum refining standard for the grade fuel they're dumping into the tank.

they treat it with a stabilizer to allow it to Perform better under cold weather conditions. and summer gas is virtually untreated or something like that.

In Tucson, Shell is cheaper than Chevron. But when I travel home (300+ mile away) I use Chevron. I drive about 75 and get 25+ MPG. Both are good.

I agree with this, but, all the gas, depending on where you are, comes from the same refinery. For example, here in AZ, there are only 2 suppliers for gasoline, and they both come from the same pipeline. The biggest thing is the addatives. Federal regulations set a min. required, and thats about all you get with the "Mom and Pop" fuel stops. Look for a fuel that is "Top Tier" rated, and you will be fine. Another thing to consider is the filtering process that the company selling the fuel has. Not many people know, or have access to the info, but, For example, AM PM's are built with the min. required filters in their tanks, and pump systems. And I have found that their change interval is routienly net met. On the other hand (out here) QT has 2 more filters than what is required (in my findings), and they have a pretty elaborate system in place so they can keep track and replace them before it becomes nessasary.

I fill up at a bulk station, not sure whos gas it is they sell 76 oil tho? Mid-grade and cheaper then regular anywhere in town! If I have to buy gas at a gas station I would buy Petro-Canada.

I would use Chevron with techron if it was convenient, although there is not a chevron near me. Always been a big fan of the techron injector cleaner too. I settle for Shell instead which gets the job done just fine.

What I wont ever do is buy Citgo. I refuse to support a socialist, Hugo Chevas run company.

i can attest to the quality difference between shell and chevron.

back in the 80's, i had a 1979 olds delta 88 with a 350-4 barrel carb. if i put 92 octane shell gas in it, the engine would ping like crazy. it would also diesel when i would turn off the engine and i would have to shut it off in drive to stop the engine.
to burn out that tank of gas, i would have to put octane boost in the tank to make the car drivable.

on the other hand, if i put 92 octane chevorn in the tank, the engine ran smoothly.

i am sure things have changed with both companies since the 80's and with the newer fuel injected engines, gas from both places seem to run fine in my vehicles.

Good man. Chavez is a straight up marxist and the Venezuelan citizens are frogs in a pot being heated slowly by the flames of communism. They have no clue what's happening to them, the poor lemmings.

But I digress. This is a gas thread.

Yes.. all the gasoline in some areas of the country come from a small handfull of refineries. However how much the refinery processes that fuel will depend on who the customer is that they are refining for. In the case of the mom/pop stations they will get the minimum standards which is cheap to refine and therefore is sold at a lower price. Run the refining process through one or more additional phases to up the standard of the fuel and now you might sell to the bigger stations. Add in the additives and now you've actually branded the fuel.

The Toyota Tacaoma and Pontiac Vibe are made at the same Nummi plant in Fremont, CA however there is a world of difference in overal quality, design, fit-n-finish between Tacoma and Vibe wouldn't you say???
