Pretty sure it's directly related to drive profile. Short trips allow condensation to buildup (milky).

You installed this on a TRD SC taco? Any chance you have more pics to show routing of your hoses? :)

Hey guys. Emptied my oil catch can today and it had some brownish foam and like some dark looking water almost. It was not very thick.

My lines are ran relatively far away from the intake and out on the engine, could this be causing the excess liquid or is it supposed to be that way?

I posted in the other oil can thread since they don't get much traffic. I do make short trips

Short trips and extra condensation because of the colder weather. The lines being longer probably doesn't help as it allows more area for condensation to form but it probably isn't that much more significant of an amount :)

Correct. After a week of driving in "cold weather" (20 below) my catch can is quarter full.

My engine is up to temp on the ultragauage for most trips i make

It's also useful in normal aspirated applications. By condensing the oil out of the hot crankcase gases before it gets to the throttle body it reduces the amount that will deposit there. Keeping that area clean helps maintain smooth operation and greatly lengthens it's service intervals.

But it's almost critical in direct injection applications where, because they never see the fuel-air mixture, even the best fuel additives can't inhibit deposit formation on intake valves and port area. In that high-temp zone the deposits bake on, forming tough enamel like coating immune to occasional cleaning sprays. So, to maintain performance in direct injection engines you have to remove the intake manifolds and shell-blast the baked-on deposits to remove them. A friend had to do this every 20 Kmiles (about $800) until he put one on his BMW.

Ah, I see. Thanks, it has been cold here and I haven't emptied for about 2000 miles or more so it makes sense.

I just installed my ADD W1 oil catch can today and I like the way it turned out. I think 11/32 fuel line would work a little better than the 3/8 fuel line...FYI We will see how she does.

I'd advise everyone to carefully consider their location and hose routing. Mounting the tank lower and closer to the PCV valve is preferable. Longer hoses with low hanging lengths will turn into oil traps. And, you want any oil condensing in the hoses to drain into the tank.

I do not have anymore pics i could try to snap a few if i can remember but i just ran one hose from pcv and the other off the intake of the blower. I didn't have to do any fancy routing of the hoses to the location of the can. Honestly the hardest part was finding a good spot to mount the can....not a whole lot of real estate on a 6spd 14.

Thanks for that I looked and I trimmed the hose because it was lower than the valve. Another question I have is it okay for the rubber hose to be touching each other (oil catch and factory)?? Basically will the vibrations from the engine wear them out...

Where the hoses run parallel, I used a couple of small cable ties to keep them together and eliminate the possibility.

Is there a pcv valve on the passenger side I should be filtering?

Negative. Ours are both setup to vent to atmosphere. On his N/A engine, his port on his intake is capped, as well as on the intake manifold. Therefore both valve covers vent on their own, into the can, without aid from circulating air from the intake and manifold.

The PCV system on our setups is completely independant of the intake.

have fun with sludge buildup due to inadequate air circulation within the block, unless your changing oil on less than 1/2 oil change intervals.

The stock PCV system is not just for emissions, but to continually pull clean fresh air through the block and pull the junk out, this helps reduce sludge.

While in my opinion a catch can is pointless on our truck in the first place (and may actually be a hindrance to proper intake valve / upper cylinder lubrication, the oil mist provides).... A standard catch can that is inline from the PCV valve to the vacuum side of the throttle body is much better than having a catch can setup like above where the valve covers breathe into the catch can via an open filter is going to hurt things in the long run for reasons described above.

Noted, and disregarded. Lol. If you understood my build, you might understand.

Not having a catch can is more of a hindrance over the life of the vehicle. Especially with the extended drain intervals people are going for these day. Sludge will be the by product of broken down oil, and its circulation through the combustion chamber.

Old cars didn't start with PCV systems. Newer high end cars have catch cans which empty the accumulated oil back into the oil pan.

Turbo setup = vent to atmosphere on this vehicle so that I don't pressurize the crank case and blow out seals and reduce HP, as well as the other benefits of the can. Cleaner valves, intake ports, pistons, and rings. Been running mine for over 4 years. Only problems mine has had have self induced.
