True. But then production costs rise.

I agree it would make better skids - what I'm not convinced of is that people already complaining about skid plate prices would pay it.

Most of your trophy truck/KOH type rigs use relatively thin aluminum, usually with a backing structure of some kind made from toob. Keeps weight down, rigidity up. Expensive to fab though.

I have a full set on my 1st gen. They've held up great but like said before I added a little extra bracing to the bellypan. I've beat the hell out of them, straightend them, and beat on em' some more. Also the customer service was awesome. I would recommend them to anyone.

Also, if you arent just batting ass through the woods all nilly dilly most of the skids i've seen have held up fine, and served their purpose. Some have held up better than others but that's neither here nor there.

    Build thread in sig...
sorry, clarification...... since we were on the topic, i was reffering to when you make them yourself, or even in the case of adapting existing ones. more of a "tips and tricks" post, vs. how to get less expensive skids as the tread was initially meant for.

Thanks all, I will be in the Gatlinburg TN. area next week and I believe Bud is only a couple hrs away in NC, might just pick them up to save the shipping.

If you buy a full set I do believe it's a little cheaper than piece by piece. It was with the 1st gens anyway.

I have found a company out of pennsiylvania called Skid row who makes a great full cover set up. It is not cheap either, but it is tough stuff and It has survived 2 trip to baja on the baja 1000 roads with no major dents or scratches. Give them a try?!

I like there products. 3/16" steel. Yes it is heavy, but saves alot of money!

Nice skids, but it looks like they don't make anything for 2nd Gen (05 & up) Tacomas.

No they don't. Only 1st gen, but you get protection from front all the way to your transfer case in some nice 3/16" steel. PEACE AT MIND! Call them and they could make some for newer tacomas, they are a small company so will be up to anything.

isn't that also because they generally don't hit them as much as someone who does rocky trails etc? they are there for oh shit moments and can be replaced or beat out, because aluminum dents right?

To an extent. Every driver's gonna have a different acceptable risk level?

I'm just saying the subframe method usually offers a better strength/weight compromise at the cost of...well, cost.
