    Hi there,
Just got a 97 tacoma and wondering what kind of timing belt it has.
My concern is whether it is one that breaks and you just fix it OR it is
the kind that when it goes the whole engine gets totaled. (interference type?)

Of course I plan to continue good maintenance on the vehicle but would like to have an awareness.

Also---- the topper leaks. It was maintained in March 2012. When I drove it home yesterday through down-pouring rain it leaked. Is this a problem that is hard to fix? I have an appointment with place the orignal owner got the topper from to fix it Tues.

    Thanks!

I moded 1999 Taco so much it had turned to Land Cruiser
If its 2.7 4 cyl then it should be chain. Nothing to worry until 200k miles unless you hear timing chain loose.

i cant remember what 4-banger that is but i know its a chain. should be good for quite some time. it is extremely rare for them to break, most often the guides will wear and break, causing excessive slack and metal to metal contact between chain and cover. you'll hear it.

i know nothing of your motor but on the old 22re's removing the valve cover and verifying that the guides were intact was a 20 min. job
