I usually just jack the whole truck up in my driveway and throw it in 4hi with the cruise control set at 20mph. 10 miles done before my 3rd beer is.

Coming from a driver who use often 4WD during winter times and on dirt roads:

1.- It's safe to run on dry asphalt and only if you don't sharply turn. Anyway, you'll see rapidly that it's hard to turn when 4WD is engaged. However if you drive like crazy or driving at very high speed on dry asphalt, you are putting more strain on the driveline than usual and it's likely that it will explode.

2.- Driveline isn't made out of paper. It's very solid piece of metal but use your brain when in 4WD mode. It won't explode if you drive with 4WD engaged on dry asphalt on a short or medium distance on a straight line. Been there, done that. Manual says that engaging 4WD for 10 miles each month is to lubricate parts: "You should drive in four- wheel drive for at least 16 km (10 miles) each month. This will assure that the front drive components are lubricated."

3.- Somes says that don't engage on wet asphalt: manual owners (mine is 2006) says otherwise: "Use this for normal driving on wet, icy or snow- covered roads. This position provides greater traction than two- wheel drive."

4.- Didn't find any notice about not to engage 4WD on a dry asphalt in my owner manual.

5.- When driving during winter times, during the day, roads aren't always covered by snow 100% of the time but my 4WD is engaged at all time. Engaging and disengaging 10-20 times during 1 hour trip, no thanks. My driveline is still there and running fine. My friends does same thing. Like I said, it's not made out of thin paper. Use your brain and don't make sharp turns.

Despite my resemblance to the Old Foagy McBadass (heh-heh) remark, I still have a hard time understanding why some of you folks can't find dirt.

San Francisco bay area. It's hard to find a place between work and home that's legal to take into dirt. Need to drive at least an hour+ to find a place and if you have a busy life because of three jobs, that's not gonna fly.

You know, until I was 21 I would have thought the same thing... I lived in upstate NY and you wouldn't have to go 5 mies to find dirt. Well after college I moved to NC. I watched the Dukes of Hazzard when I was little and didn't think that dirt would be hard to find in the south. :) I was wrong. The only thing unpaved within 45 minutes of me is either private, or just a short stretch with no outlet that I wouldn't recommend going down unless you know one of the five people that live on it.

My God man, how dare you dispute the self appointed experts of all things Toyota! Don't you realize they're all more knowledgable than any engineer hired by Toyota? Seriously, why wouldn't you believe some 20 something self educated expert over a professional automotive engineer hired by the largest motor company on the planet? Shame on you.

Agreed, but the tone of many contradicts this.

Wrong. The lake in July...bad idea.

As for not finding dirt, I've been trying to find a place to off-road near my place just north of Newmarket, near Toronto, since I got my truck in April, and I have yet to find one that's legal. And I'm desperate to go...as are my little girls who I promised to take with me.

I tell people not to engage their 4wd system on pavement because there's been a few here that have done it and wonder why their trucks bind and buck and make funny noises when they attemp a turn. I've read that even while going straight it's not recommended. Having hundreds of miles of dirt roads 10 minutes from the house makes not engaging on pavement a easy decision for me. I know they say to emgage it every month but I really don't see a problem doing it once every couple months. My last Yota (88 4Runner) was bought new and went over 300,000 miles with no problems with the 4wd system. I engaged it on a average of once every 2-3 months...but only on dirt/snow.

My goodness how do you find time to wheel on weekends if you are doing full time school, over 80 hours work PLUS two part time jobs (another 40 between the two)?? I mean, how do you squeeze all those hours in five days?

You must not have kids. :p Wanna trade for three months? :D

No kids...and I'll take my current schedule over being a stay-at-home dad anyday! haha

The last 4 or 5 of my wheelin' trips have began after midnight, and ended around 4:30am. I don't sleep anymore, my body really has gotten used to about 20-22 hours of sleep a week.
