    Too few to list.
Hmmm... only downside I can think of is 4x4 cost a little bit more.

Other than the prerunner guys wanting your truck? NOPE! :D

Well, there is that small price difference but it's worth it in the long run.

Vette scrapes on the speed bumps at the mall. 4x4 doesn't.

    ^^ THIS

I had always wanted a 4WD Toyota truck, and I owned 4 2WD Toyota trucks before I finally got a 4WD. I always considered it but didn't do it, and then I would be pissed off when I got into a situation where 4WD was needed. The extra maintenance is minimal if you aren't abusive. I haven't actually needed 4WD yet, but I know I will, and I am glad to finally have it.

So what is this switch? Is a 4x4 2wd until you want to switch it to 4wd?

    Downsides to 4x4?

    Cannot run lift spindles.
Cannot run as long of a long travel if you go long travel.
More weight means less lift for a given spring (usually about .25") up front

    Also...

Your buddies will call you to get them unstuck.
No blank switches on dash means you need to get more creative with aux lighting switch locations.
People will continually yell "ATRAC SUCKS!" as they drive by.

Those little downsides will be wiped away when you need to turn that switch.

Do you want to be the puller or the pullee?

    As for the stupid comment...

A-TRAC rocks, actually... Tires that spin in the air while you remain stuck are pretty useless... A-TRAC, lockers, and limited slip are all systems the Tacoma Off Road 4WD has that limit or stop one tire from spinning while the other tire on the same axle is doing nothing, and you aren't moving!

I have NEVER (yet) been stuck with my 2010. In the meantime, I have used it to pull others up hills... James and Imsikotic to name a couple... of course they were not 4x4s, either.

If you don't understand what A-TRAC is or does, then it is natural to fear it or bad mouth it... But, it is a Toyota product, and like other Toyota products, it works great.

Lol , if that ^^^ was aimed at me , I actually did a poor job of editing the quote in my post , I was referring to the blank switches

You get so many bitches your " take a number " dispenser runs out of numbers
    So you refill the roll
But in doing so, you end up out giving multiple identical numbers, leading to bitch fights.

Bitch fights are the purported number 1 downside to having 4x4 capabilities.
