Rear axle seal?

    My inspector passed the inspection ofmy tacoma today but advised that I replace the rear axle seal of the passenger side wheel. He popped off a cap from the back side of the drum and it was wet with gear lube. The other side was dry as he pointed out.

    Last year I just cleaned up the break drum assembly real well as the rear breaks were sticking intermittenly. It bandaided the issue but now I want to fix the problem.

    I have an 07' trd sport 4wd. and just changed the rear diff fluid (Gah). I've searched the site and youtube, have read some threads but havn't found a specific How to or DIY for the repair!

    I did learn that a clogged rear diff breather can cause the seals to leak. Interesting as I've suspected the new breather I installed when I did the rear diff breather mod seems to be stuck closed. My thought is that it's normal.

    Can someone point me in the rite direction for repair but not to the dealership?

    yeah I read that thread. I wasn't sure if pulling the 3rd member out just to get to the seal was necessary.

    It isn't necessary. Disconnect the e-brake cable, the brake line, and the 4 bolts. Don't forget to drain the axle tough.

    Thanks. Thats what I was hoping for. Do you know if theres an inner an outer seal?

    There is no need to drain the fluid! Jack up the side you are working on and go. Hardest part is getting the drum brake back together.

    What the ... I recommend in draining the diff oil but that's me. Also, you have to disassemble the rear brake shoes to disconnect the parking brake cable in order to pull out the axle shaft completely out from the axle housing. I think the disassembly and reassembly of the rear brakes are straight forward and shouldn't be to complicated :cookiemonster:

    I just did this job a few weeks ago. if you have the axle tilted upwards, you won't loose a drop. No BS. Unless you have the diff SERIOUSLY overfilled

    Ha Ha. It's been leaking better than six months now. Just change the diff fluid last week so i should be good for awhile :rolleyes: maybe do a beak clean job again lol

    Since you are changing the seal, you may want to replace or at least check the bearing while you are at it.
