Ford doesnt put the regular V6 in the crew cabs, that motor is strictly reserved for the work trucks, just like toyota does with the Tundra. can you honestly imagine this big ass 4wd truck with a regular v6?:confused::confused::confused:

well we are both wrong. You can get a quad cab V6, but it is a 3.7L V6. but you cant get a 4x4 with that engine. So if you get a 4x4 quad cab you can only get 3 engines. (3.5L ecoboost, 5.0L V8, and 6.2L V8).

I like a mid size truck better than a full size truck. They are just too much hassle to deal with for me. You can't really go wrong with a Toyota. Ford makes a good truck too though. If Ford sold the new Ranger in the US I would have looked at one before I bought my Tacoma.

^^^^this. both are very good trucks, with good resale values and reliability reps. my neighbor has an F150 harley edition and while it is a beautiful truck, i don't envy his weekend trips out-of-state fuel costs, not to mention that he's forced to leave it outside when he doesn't travel, to make room for other vehicles . eco-boost or not, the taco will almost certainly beat it in ANY scenario. i have a DCLB and have PLENTY of room for my childs carseat, or anyone else back there, not to mention the maneuverability and fitment in the garage. I vote Tacoma :D

Hey, I didn't say I'd buy it, just saying it's not a bad price on a quad cab, 4x4 ecoboost. Personally, I'd rather have the V8. The Ecoboost doesn't seem to consistantly get as good mileage as expected. If you can baby it and keep it out of boost it does but if it has to make power, forget it. I'd rather just have a V8 and no turbos to deal with if I went with an F-150.

If you do any off-roading go with the Taco. The new F-150s have terrible ground clearance

You want gas mileage with a tacoma, get the 4 cyl 5-lug base. That's the only Tacoma that will see 25+ MPG. If you go V6, might as well get the f150 ecoboost.it all depends on if you want or need a full-size truck. Full-size will cost more in Oil, tires, and overall maintenance, plus they are a SOB to park.

I have a 2012 f150 extended cab 4x4 with the 5.0 v8 and am getting a little over 18mpg in the first 6000 miles of ownership. My previous truck was a 4 cylinder 4x4 extended cab Tacoma which averaged just over 22mpg for the first year or so that I kept track.

The only issue i have with the f150 is that it is a tight squeeze height wise (truck is a bit of 6'4") entering my parking garage at work. Other than that the size hasn't been an issue.

Considering you want to hit the mtn bike trails I vote tacoma.
At times, I have to get creative when I park my full size truck at trail heads. :D
Unless of course you live in the great wide open. My area is heavily wooded w/ lots of fire roads.
Gas mileage I average the same as my 06 Tacoma 4x4 DC fwiw.
    This is w/ a 4.6L V8.

I have been back and forth with this same question. I drove my friends F150 this weekend and it made me think I might rather have an F150 extended cab over a Tacoma DCLB.
The thing that keeps pushing me back to Toyota is this website. It's not the users opinions that Toyota is better, It's the number of people that are hear 24/7 to help others trouble shoot any problem that they might have.
So the difference in trucks is somewhat negligible, but the user support is huge here, and the Ford forums kinda suck!

 Maybe it's indicative of the F-150's depreciation. Faster depreciation means they recover less value if they repo the truck on default, so the loan is riskier.

I drove an F150 as a rental in LA earlier this year. Everything about the truck felt bigger than it needed to be. It was a pain to park. The doors were heavy and can't be held on its first detent when opened. Tailgate was heavy. The engine supposedly made over 300 hp, yet acceleration was slow. Brake pedal felt worse than the Taco's. I'm 6 ft and the Taco's interior isn't cramped for me, so any extra cabin space would be wasted.

Interestingly, the MFD in the instrument panel could show the inclinometers and 4WD driveline status. This, in a 4x2 truck.

I echo this. I recently went back to a Taco Sport (I had an 09 SR5) after having a 2012 Ford Lariat for only 5 months. Yeah...5 months.

It was way, way too much truck for me. I had the EcoBoost, and I have a very light foot, and only averaged about 15-16 mpg. With my granny style of driving, that just sucked.

The F-150 is large, as you know, and I found it difficult to maneuver in parking spaces.

But the main thing is it simply would not fit into my garage. Now, that may not be important to you, and I do "normally" keep my Taco in the driveway.

But - if there is severe weather coming...and a good likelihood of hail...having the option to put the Taco out of harm's way is comforting to me.

The EcoBoost, if you ask the guys on the Ford forums, is good mainly for regular towing of boats, campers, RV's, etc.

The Lariat was nice...but the Tacoma is home to stay, IMO.

    Good luck.

P.S. Resale value of Tacoma versus the F-150....check it out. ;)

Edit - if you do your own oil changes, go to an F-150 forum and do a search. Even the most die hard shadetree mechanics hate changing oil in the EcoBoost. I didn't own mine long enough to require an oil change, but I read enough bitches and gripes to know I was going to gladly take it to the dealer and let them deal with the mess.

i had the same problem before buying my 2012 trd sport dcsb taco. the base eco boost was $35k... 6 more then i got my taco for.

also i wanted a taco because it's a midsize truck... and dont want.. or need... a blimp of a full size truck. All the full size trucks these days are gigantic. tacoma is just the right size.

I had a similar decision to make earlier this year.

The 2WD Ecoboost will get similar MPG to the V6 Tacoma 4WD.

If you favor maneuverability, the Tacoma is better.
If you want a full size truck for maximum passenger space and/or a bed for fitting larger loads, the F150 is better.

If you want to do any heavy towing, look at different trucks/engines. They make some pretty big claims about the Ecoboost's towing capabilities. I've heard of enough people over-taxing those engines thinking they could do frequent heavier towing with them to recommend against them for that purpose.

We have a couple 2011 F150s with the 5.0 for work trucks, it gets up and goes, I'm pretty impressed with the power. I've driven a couple of them and I have to say I really like them over all. Now we also have some older f150s and a few f250/350s with different engine options. After working on all of them I'm not a huge fan of ford. I'd probably buy the newest f150 if it fit the bill but I definitely like Toyota's designs better.

I cannot imagine owning a Ford, let alone willingly paying for one. Sorry, but enough relatives & friends have shown me their "quality", that I would never consider one. Sure, Taco's can have their problems, but I would take one any day over the ford.

If you really want a full-size, get a Tundra..
