I got an LSD installed in my 2010 DCLB Prerunner a week ago. I know, a bunch of you are thinking, "REally, a freakin' prerunner." Well, I live in Guam. Among the many things that suck about living on a tropical island, one is the roads being made with crushed coral. It rains about every 2 seconds here and thus the roads are super slick. When it rains hard it's pathetic trying to get my truck to go out into traffic with the one legger. I have to say, I love the LSD.

No, it's not practical when it comes to money I suppose for most. But if you're done with all the other mods you can think of and have the dough laying around, DO IT. You'll love it.

Just wanted to share. Ya'll carry on about your tacomaworld.com browsing.

ae111black: I bet you do know something about rain. haha.

LSD is limited slip differential. Basically, a 2wd is really a 1wd if you have an open diff. an LSD transfers power to both wheels. This is the super simplistic explination.

Sounds like the factory Auto LSD would have been just fine for you?

haha. absolutely not. The factory auto LSD is crap. It's not an LSD at all. It's a sensor managed braking system that doesn't work for anything.

The trouble with the stock "ALSD" in my tacoma is that instead of like a mechanical LSD which will actually send power to both wheels, the ALSD only applies break to the wheel that is slipping. Because the only wheel that truely gets power is the right rear, this means that when I try to pull out in traffic in slippery conditions I am not able to get more traction from power to both wheels, instead I'm left with only less slipping by a reduction of power to only one wheel.

You don't have real LSD. See below.

What brand did you end up going with? Auburn?

    Good explanation for the n00bs.

Wow.... seriously? What about the other extreme of the locker since you have a PreRunner. Did you try locking the rear after trying AUTO LSD? I am sure you did as a new diff. isn't cheap. Anyway the braking done in AUTO LSD mimics what a mechanical LSD does without the worry of clutch failure in the diff. You have to wonder why Toyota dropped the mech. diff. for the elec. system in '09 and never went back? This line of comments is for anyone and not just the OP who I am sure is happy with his new set up.?

85k of abuse on my mechanical LSD and it's still functioning at 100%.

Lockers suck for getting traction on slippery surfaces and LSD is far superior in them so OP's choice sounds like the best to me. Many trucks in his similar conditions use LSD in the rear and a locker up front.

I know everyone embraces technology in here, but IMO in a wet environment the less electronics the better.

IMO Toyota stopped making them that way because
    A) it's cheaper
    B) they make more money selling brakes
    C) only 5% off suv's and pickups are actually used offroad

I am sure. Anyway, there are so many options aren't there?

I did go with Auburn and am very happy with the choice. A locker wasn't really an option for me as the problem I was facing and wanted to remedy was a daily driving problem. I didn't want to have to lock my axles just to get out in traffic or be able to drive up a hill during my daily commute and then turn it off. Plus its not good to lock your axles and make turns any how. And, as XXXX said, they're not that great for just a slippery condition.

671 Motorsports. The LSD and new gears installed came out to 1300. The price of the LSD and gears were a little more than what I could have gotten if I bough online and had shipped, but I'm more than happy to pay the guys there the extra. They did quality work on friends vehicles and so far mine is a champ.

Not to sidetrack, but are the Duratracs that bad in the rain? I was considering getting some, and I too live on an island in the atlantic ocean, although it is far from tropical. :(

they are a soft compound siped tire so IMO they are great in the rain. I have over 30k on mine.

If you want to have some real fun in the rain try some KM2's. I pray every time I drive in a storm with them.

i ran my duratracs for a little over 40k and year round. had to actually put some effort into getting them to break loose in the rain(if you get my hint) so i am not sure how anyone would say they were anything but great in the rain. always did quite well in the snowy mountians of Tennessee during family trips in the winter to the inlaws. but maybe im just an odd case???
