I plan on changing over to Mobil 1 Syn Extended Performance and change over every 10,000miles or every year. They warranty their oil to 15k for the extended performance. Used the stuff for the past 4yrs with no issues.

And I doubt there's anything wrong with those engines either. Numerous people posted their sob story on the interwebs when all that was going on. The common complaint was that they could not produce their receipts for oil changes. Imagine that!

I agree. I had one of the V6's in a 1998 Sienna Van. Every 3k oil changes using Dino Oil and it is still running today. After my wife ran up 168K miles on it we gave it to her cousin and she has since put another 42K on it. Clean as a whistle inside the valve cover.

That being said the owners manual stated oil change intervals of 7,500 miles which is screwed up. That could be an issue IDK as I have always used 3K as interval on DIno Oil.

You may well be right but the fact still remains they do sludge. Most people in urban areas driving should be listed as "severe" because of short trips and stop and go, do most owners think that that is probably one of the worst case driving habits? That probably is the worst thing you can do to engine oil. The years are not limited to just the older ones either many cases into 08's and 09's Yes I think it can be avoided, the OP's problem was probably not of his own making but typical of maintenance errors. For some reason Toyota’s seem to be susceptible to this problem it maybe just the shear numbers but it should be a wake up call to take better care of your ride.

I use synthetic due to the cold winters. Synthetic has a lower pour point than dyno, which means it'll still pour at a temperature where dyno turns into molasses.

I found Quaker State's specs online and the pour point of their dino 5w30 is -30°c (-22°F) while their synthetic is -45°c (-49°F).

I've had my engine cool down to -30 with the synthetic and it still started. With dino I probably would've needed to be towed.

Fortunately Toyota had the forethought to make the door handles and all the controls usable with thick gloves on.

    I've never seen 0w40.

5w40 would be a synthetic turbodiesel formula, but it's not going to clean your engine.
It is simply oil... that's all it is. It has additives that might perhaps hold contaminants in suspension better than conventional oils, but other than that, it's not some magical "engine flush" (which, BTW, do not ever put "engine flush" into your engine).
