Hydrolocked my truck yesterday

    My truck is on its way to Headmasters to have the engine ripped open and worked on. I couldn't do the warranty route for a variety of reasons not limited to but certainly including its illegal.

    I've had water up to my fender flares. That's over 3 feet. Just go sllooowww is the key.

    I can't see how you hydrolock in 10" puddle, most likely some water got spryed on the electrical parts like coil or spark-plug wire...., where you had some bad wiring and cusing problem there.

    Even a snorkel won't save you if you like to try to hydro-plain over puddles. The air ram intake faces forward and will suck up water huge amounts of water if they are spraying upwards. I'm sure the URD did not help one bit, but pretty sure this issues is unavoidable when doing ridiculous speeds over puddles. This story could of had a real bad ending should OP of hit a log, deep hole, or anything else lurking in puddles. Just be glad you didn't get hurt and hopefully some other members will read this and slow down so some good will come out of your experience.

    Turned the engine manually with a wrench and it stopped like it hit something. We think theres a broke piston and possibly some other odds and ends. I'll keep you all posted.

    Its not that hard to hydrolock an engine when the URD CAI is right in front of the radiator. Lesson learned...

    Really that depends on the amount of water. You can hydrolock an engine withe less than a coffee cup's worth of water if it is drawn in at the right time. The combustion cylinder of most engines is between 50 and 100cc of fluid. Exceed that fluid by ANY amount, and you will hydrolock, and possibly damage your engine.

    Did you remove the spark plugs before you did this? If you are hydrolocked, then it will react just like that until you clear out the water. Water is NOT compressible.

    I didn't even notice the location. He should of broke his cherry out with us then he would have another 3k in his pocket.

    Also curious of puddle. It was dry as hell on the trails this last weekend.

    Of course. If you hydrolock in any condition where there is enough inertia to exceed the tolerances of the components, then you have a recipe for damage. If there is NOT enough inertia to exceed the component tolerances though, then there should be no damage.

    So, if you have a 50 cc combustion chamber and run it up to 35 cc of water, that water may be enough to drown the spark, the engine will slow, and for the next stroke, there is less inertia, so when you draw in 55 cc and it hydrolocks, it does do gently and hopefully without damage.

    Of course if you draw in a full cylinder of water while spinning 4000 rpm, you're looking at a rather large chunk of scrap metal.

    Technically speaking, water is compressible, but only very slightly and under extreme pressures. However you are correct that you can think of it as being non-compressible since it is negligible under these conditions. 40 MPa ~1.8% volume reduction. That's under the weight of 4 km of water.

    Bad idea? Probably! Couldn't resist, but it turned out fine.

    Did get my filter wet a few weeks ago washing the truck with the garden hose. Started acting a little funny at high RPMs, guess that's when it was sucking water the most. Whoops.

    First, I simply said if you drew in more than the CC of the combustion chamber, you would hydrolock and possibly damage the engine. I never said it WOULD. Second, when it comes to hydrolocking an automotive engine, you can pretty much consider water is not compressible. The compression of water is so infinitesimal that it is essentially zero. No need to get the physics book out for this situation. :D

    Our trails have holes that swallow full size lifted trucks so I go in slow at all times unless I'm following a speed demon on the trail and even then I slam on the brakes before the hole. Also cleaning mud water in the cab gets old after a while :eek:


    So all I need to do to get up to 200 is turn it backwards
