Is this really true? I have never used my valet key since I bought my truck.

The main idea behind the valet key was giving that to a parking attendant or repair shop instead of your personal key ring with house and similar keys. The chip inside was also supposed to be more resilient to copying as well (so they said) The valet key was just another thing to tote around, so many just handed over the key from their key rings instead. Changes to ignition systems have supposedly made valet keys less uniquely useful (again so they say). My truck came with no valet key.

I see folks post stuff like this quite often...but why? I've never found a chipped key to be an inconvenience, plus it comes with the added theft deterrent capabilities. I could understand if having chipped keys isn't a priority or necessary feature for some, I just don't understand the strong disdain some people have for them...?

Pretty much this ^^^ ... I believe the valet key cant be used to program a new chipped key. That is the only use on a Tacoma

Never heard of this, You sure? Like said before, its pointless for a Tacoma, as it is only supposed to work the doors and ignition and not be able to open say a locked glove box. I got one with my 2010, and I was  why they even bothered to give me one, but hey, I'll take another spare key.

this is what my dealer told me so who knows?

if a key, valet or otherwise, starts up your Taco it has to be chipped (unless you have an older model or trim level that does not require a chipped key) so it made sense to me to hear that the valet key could only be used a few times before the truck must be started with a regular chipped key.

if they were supposed to provide a valet key i would like to have one because it's a spare key that i don't have to pay for, albeit one that has limited use. based on the replies here it is clear that Toyota no longer provides them.

What he said. Since most locksmiths can now copy almost any chipped key out there, it makes valet keys useless for our trucks since they don't lock out the trunk/glovebox/etc.

I took delivery of my 2012 in 12/2011 and did not get a valet key.

Don't ever trust what the dealer tells you. LOL. Would be cool if that's the case though. But from rest of the replies, it seem no one with a 2012 got one.

Purchased 2012 1/12- 2 keys, 2 fobs, no valet key. My big gripe is key/fob are separate.

Toyota stopped producing the valet keys for the 2012 due to no locking compartments inside the vehicle. I received two keys, two fobs, and the metal tag with a id number incase I need to have keys made in the future at the dealership.
