How well do they do off road with the locker?
I was set on a 4x4, but the more I think about, I can most likely get by with a Prerunner OR.
I don't do anything hardcore, mostly riding trails to remote camping spots, fishing holes, etc. My biggest obstacles would probably be steep hills possibly rutted a little, some deep loose sand on occasion and maybe some slick clay/mud.
Sounds like the Prerunner OR could probably handle this, but I'd like to hear from a few owners to get their opinions.
    Thanks!

I know where this is going to go:cool:

I went with the Prerunner, if I was to do it again I would lean towards a 4X4.

You will regret not having the 4x4 when you need it. If you do like to go off-road, put your mind at ease and get the 4wd. Locker is good, but sometimes hard to engage when you are already stuck. I had the same question when I bought my truck and I am sooooo glad I got the 4x4. Just my two cents.

Well, I drive a Rubicon Unlimited now and almost never put it in 4wd. Granted, the Rubi is lifted and on 35's and has 4:10 gears so it easily crawls over obstacles even in 2wd. It's really much more vehicle than I need. The Taco would be a lot roomier and more comfortable, hoping the TRD Off Road Prerunner would be sufficient off road for what I do anymore.

Same here... I have a Prerunner sport. I've only gotten stuck once off road, and I've done some pretty good canyon trails. But mostly it's on hard dirt out in the desert. That said, every time I'm off road, I'm scared I'll need 4x4.

If you have the money, get 4x4. If you don't have the money to comfortably do it, don't. Get some carpet samples, a shovel, a high lift, etc.. And know that 4x4 will do so much more off road for you than any other modification.

My next truck will be 4x4.

I don't know if you're joking, but don't lead the OP in the wrong direction... Suspension, lift, and tires will do nothing compared to what 4x4 would do. Not to mention that 4x4 would be cheaper than all those things you said. And as much as pre runner guys hate the thought, you could do a pre-runner style build on a 4x4 truck. That's what I would have liked to have done.

Haven't been stuck in my TRD Off Road PreRunner but I don't try to rock crawl or go through huge mud holes either! I camp, fish and hit the trails just fine. Tires make all the difference.

Two Az guys, two different opinions. lol
I don't rock crawl. I don't even off road just for the sake of off roading. I like to get into the back country, sometimes on primitive roads. Encounter the occasional mud hole during monsoon season in the mountains, but I don't seek them out.

Then you'd be fine with the Off Road Package man...I've gone through DEEP soft sand and some other shit just fine. Like I mentioned, tires make a world of difference. I'm running 33" BFG A/Ts and these things do great in the sand and rocks. Goodyear Duratracs are also awesome tires...maybe even look into the KM2s :)

Just sayin... There's alot to see here in Az.. someof which you may need 4wd. And I've always lived by the rule better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have It.

Not a by rule by any means...

Correct me if I'm wrong but can't you get a nice SR5 4x4 (non TRD) for the cost of a TRD PreRunner?
