That is why my current truck has the 5 speed auto. I had the 6 speed manual in my previous truck 06 X-Runner and it was crap.

My 5spd now has a bad synchro in 2nd. Trans has been apart, but they can't see anything damaged or anything in oil. That means I must drive my truck correctly and the clunk into 2nd is a mechanical defect that should be replaced under warranty......one would assume. Going on week 2 here with trans apart. 25,000 miles.

I know what you are saying, and I wasn't trying to slight mechanics. It is a tough job, and the good ones are worth gold. The fact is though, they are not engineers. The term "engineer" has almost lost it's meaning in the US because of the misuse. A real engineer is the product of both education and experience. This transmission issue doesn't require and engineer's opinion to diagnose anyway. It would require an engineer to fix.

MT-90 is my choice and it has considerably improved the synchro function in my transmission. These transmissions are the most sensitive to lubrcation that I have ever seen. I hope it helps with yours.

All correct...I didn't bust my ass working on projects and studying to gain the same title as a glorified mechanic...I respect mechanics and the work they do, but they are not engineers, they are mechanics.

Regarding engineer's experience (from an earlier poster): You are not a Professional Engineer until you have 5 years under another PE and you take the PE exam, which is by no means easily completed. I wouldn't trust a Engineer in Training, but I would trust a Professional Engineer.

My 5spd in my 92 is so sloppy compared to the 6spd in my 06. The 6spd is a little louder but shifts and feels 10x better than my 92

2012 5spd, 4250 miles on the clock. Second gear chunks in to gear, often makes a cracking noise when shifting to 2nd below 3k rpm, feels like total shit. I read a lot before purchase about people hating their manual transmission tacomas but told myself that it may suck to drive, but it should last. I'm not so convinced now, and really wish I had just gotten an auto. Talked myself out of that because I wanted to maintain the 'driving experience' I was used to in owning performance oriented manual cars for a decade, and I didn't want to have an auto on a weak truck constantly searching for the right gear. Regrets!

I work in the city and am used to traffic and the related stress in a manual transmission vehicle. Dreading the noises and hesitations shifting, combined with the constant worry that I'm damaging something have made this unbelievably worse.

I've always thought that I just had a noisy tranny because it's a truck and not a sports car. The only grinding I get is while trying to shift into first when I'm rolling, like when approaching a stop light that turns green as you approach it. But I thought that the roughness of the tranny was supposed to be like that. Kind of reminds me of driving an old 60's truck with those really long stick shifts. :p

It would be a extra step, but i would recommend removing the short shifter to eliminate the issue of the OEM add on. Secondly I would take it to a different certified Toyota dealer to get an opinion. The good news is that it seems like your under warranty so if it did fail, it should be fixed at no cost to you.

I'm sorry that your having trouble with the 6spd. As a 6spd owner myself I haven't had any issues (not even 5k on the odometer though ;) ) a lot of people on TW dislike the 6 spd. Keep in mind that nobody every posts a thread 100k on my 6spd and i'm loving every minute of it. Don't give up on it. Hopefully its something minor.

no friction rings in there = crappy decision by Toyota/Aisin.

Mine felt terrible with the stock fluid. A fast gear change was 3 seconds. I tried a GL5 (mobil 1) to see how it would respond - crazily enough it was BETTER than the stock stuff but still would give the random grind into 4th gear. I decided I didn't want to re-hash another 'GL5 killed my synchros' situation so it didn't stay in there long.

I'm now a month or so into using MT-90 and I've yet to have another grind. It just goes into gear, every time, no argument, even 1st gear from 5 mph is easy (it was impossible before). It's been getting much better over time as the GL5 sulfur remnants get eaten off the synchros so don't expect an instant fix.

You'll never fix the shifting noises... the CLICK SNAP CLUNK CRACK you hear reflected off of buildings you drive next to when changing gears will always be there.

Me too! Stopped by Toyota, figured I'd let em have it at 59,044, forgot about the 5 years. About 5 months out of warranty.

I'm hoping it makes that large of a difference.

You American's are lucky, in Canada we cannot get a double can short box automatic.

Double cab long boxes are all auto
Double cab short boxes are all manual.

I think what happens is that the synchros get bitched up from essentially non-synchronized shifting. They are pretty soft, and once you raise a burr on them it takes a while to wear it back down.

I ended up trying many oils before landing on MT-90 and the difference was pretty immediate. It is still a bit ponderous to shift but the grinding and hang-ups are gone. I was getting pretty bad grinds into 2nd and third. Downshifts into 1st had to be from a dead stop. The part that is incredible is that Toyota doesn't even seem to know what works in their own transmissions. The stock oil and the stuff they spec is just plain wrong.

 we are on the same page then. I work with too many "so called" engineers everyday and it boggles my mind how some of them get there. On the other hand there are definitely some awesome engineers out there, but im going to guess in this case not so much.

I have much more than 100k and I'm loving every minute of it!:D

Also, I agree that MT-90 works wonders in these transmissions. Much smoother.

Well you can chaulk mine up as a "hit" then, my 6spd works great. I think part of the issue is people don't post nearly as frequently when things are working as they should be. They post much more frequently when they have problems though. That's internetz 101.

If the insurance doesn't pay for mine the dealer told me a refurbished trans with labor is $2980. FYI for those with 6 speed it's probably around that too if you need it swapped. Finding a non-dealer shop is probably a good idea for saving some $..
