So...buy a 2012 or keep a 2005?

Ive got a 2005 dclb 4wd auto trd sport. Has 123,xxx miles..runs good. Has typical toyota problems (saging rear springs, noisy blower motor, had 1 bad wheel bearing, etc...) Ive kept the maint. up good on it and has no real issues currently. Just wanting some input on what everyone else is doing these days in regards to newer tacomas. It seems like every tacoma i see on the road today in my area is a 2012 and ive the itch now...I've talked to local guys and NO ONE seems to have anything older than an 08 or 09...Is it time to upgrade my worn parts or upgrade to a new truck??

Well my experience once you get the bug for a new vehicle its hard to shake. I have a '12 and love it.

 

If it was me. I thought about it before, but don’t got a real itch for new one. I owe about $2500. After its paid off, would like to make it a mid-travel or possibly LT setup and enjoy it. Simply just 5100’s & AAL, Pro Comp 7089, TC UCA’s, 4X Innovation sliders at the moment with 135,000 miles.

 

I'd keep what I have if I were you. The 05 is probably paid for by now, and Homer seems like he's never going to finish his 12 satoshi, and the 12 aftermarket bumpers aren't as good looking as the 05-11s.
You can go to the junker and find some new rear springs, or just put some new shocks in, that'll be significantly less than a new truck. You can probably find some slightly used bilsteins from someone like me who got the TRD OR package and then immediately upgraded to something else.

 

good time to buy a new, while you still can get a good amount for yours.

 

This is definitely a good question. As Mikehole stated, get on CL and find 2009-2012 takeaways for suspension upgrades or hell... lift it with some OME gear. Leather interior, new sounds system, new wheels...dare I say Supercharger!!! Basically do something that makes you fall back in love with your '05.

I'd relish in the opportunity to not have a car payment (if that is your position). You know once you buy a new 2012 or 2013 you'll throw a bunch of money at upgrades so you'll go from saving a bunch of money to spending a bunch. I'm not one to even say anything to that last part b/c I throw money out the window for fun. But it's something to consider. IF I had a tacoma paid off I'd be one happy man. Wait for the 3rd gen and then consider buying up, as it stands now there's not a huge difference between '05 & '12.

 

You could get a solid Mid Travel Set up for the price you will pay over for the 12' and pocket alot of extra. and your truck would be solid. If you arent into oofroading and you just want a new vehicle get the 12 you'll be happy

 

i really wouldnt buy any pick up truck this year, there are so many complete re engineering going on with somany trucks right now. By mid 2013 there will announcements on new GM, toyota, Ford trucks and even maybe VW amarak.

I had to buy my 2012 because my 2001 got stole, i was sitting on it til the new herd of pick up landed. Im still hoping to sell my 2012 when i see what come down the pipe...or keep it of it looks bad

 

i say keep the 05 until it doesnt turn on anymore. with the money youre saving from your payments you could have a bad ass truck.

 

thanx for all the input everyone..for the record i actually owe around 6,000 on the truck since i bought it used a few years ago. I def. would like to have a new one, but that payment would suck even with my trade in.

Maybe im just different (or poor, haha) but I cant afford to go buy a $30k truck and then throw $3-4k worth of mods and wheels and tires on it. and i def. like doing mods.

 

If you like mods turn your 05 in to something special. I'd take my 07 over a stock 12 anyday

 

It has 5100's on it already...fronts at .85 and 265/70/17 bfg at's on trd sport wheels...nothing special...I just want to make sure that if i decided to get (for example) ome dakars, tc uca, coilovers, rims, etc- that it would last me. I know its a toyota and all, but im not sure of the longevity of these 2nd gens. yet. Ive seen a guy on here with like 280k on an 06 but it was a 6spd that he regulary changed the fluid in

 

I would keep the 2005. Build the 2005 how you want it to be with all of the money you would be spending on the 2012 payments.

 

I was kinda on the fence, but after reading some opinions of fellow tacoma owners, im kinda leaning towards keeping it now. If toyota keeps making their trucks like they did in the past, then it should be a good truck....right?

I have owned 2 older 4runners (an 87 and 89) and had an 02 4wd reg. cab and i beat the shit out of those trucks and they kept on runnin...the 89 runner had over 200,000 when i bought it!!

anyone on here ever had any major problems with auto trans. bolted to the v6's on these 2nd gens?

Keep what you have and fix it up. You still have half the life left in your current rig. I have a 2012 and love it but they're expensive.
