Back up cameras

Does anyone know about Gentex mirrors. I saw a install for hooking the
back up camera, seemed almost too easy. My big question is do you
have to fish the wire out from the headliner or take off the little plastic
glove box overhead to get to the wire. I really don't want to pull any part
of the headliner down. Any hints would help. Thanks

 

Is your question more specific to the install of the Gentex backup monitor mirror or the Gentex mirror itself -- I have a Gentex homelink / autodim -- it was a breeze to install... not sure on the monitor mirrors, but i imagine it's just as easy as long as you can find video cable...

I watched the install video too and was curious. I pulled down the headliner above the mirror just enough to get my fingers in there and, sure enough, there was the wire! Pulled out easily (and has since been tucked back in until I can afford to buy the mirror).

 

X2 you should be able to just reach up and pull out the existing wire on the 09s and plug in the gentex mirror with adaptor.

I wish my 06 was wired up i would already have it installed!

 

i saw that video and was thinking about upgrading to the larger view mirror. but, i have built in bluetooth, and the microphone is at the top of the mirror. i am not sure if the replacement mirror has the mic too.

 

I am confused...don't the 2009 models come with the camera/mirror already wired? Mine did.

 

the 09s are prewired (i'm not sure if every model though). but you can buy the mirror; it's literally plug and play. there are 2 view sizes though, the standard and a larger, i think 3 inches.

 

Just installed my mirror today. I had a tough time taking off the original because I had no concept of how the clip securing the original mirror functioned. Do I push up, in, left, or right? I just pried off the plastic covering which exposed the clip. Pushed it outwards and the mirror popped off. After that, everything was downhill. It really is as easy as they say on the video. Taking off the original mirror was the hardest part. I got the 3.5 inch screen. The mirror is not overly huge like some other brands. It looks good. Screen works great.

 

that's the larger view i'm thinking about getting and selling my existing one.

can you tell if there is a microphone at the top of the mirror?

 

Microphone? You got me on that one. There's a power button to turn the screen on and off, and there is a sensor for auto dimming. I think that's it.

 

If you upgrade and want to sell the original let me know please.

 

link to video anyone? I have a based 09 tacoma regular cab with the camera prewire. Can I just buy the mirror and hook it up or it is not plug/play with my base model? TIA.

 

I'm tempted to buy the 3.5" video screen mirror from Gentex.
It would be much better than the stock 2.4" screen which I find too small..

 

Just my opinion, but weren't we all born with necks that can rotate? Back up cameras/video systems are for lazy "A" holes that drive Lincoln Navagators. You guys are better than that.

 

I take a quick look at the mirror screen and still turn around to back up.

 

The backup mirror lets me back up to my trailer hitch and have the ball directly under it ready to hook up. It also lets me be sure the neighborhood kids haven't left something behind the truck before I put back up (like the bike one kid left a couple of weeks ago). When the dew covers the truck windows and outside mirrors (most mornings in Florida) it lets me back out of a tight driveway without hitting my wife's SUV. It also lets me back into a parking space and get within an inch of the car behind me.

But I guess I'm just lazy.

this guy posted on several forums, but here is one link. you can see the video etc.

mine has the built in bluetooth and the microphone is at the top of the mirror, so i need to check if the larger view has the microphone too
