Sorry...didn't mean to ruffle your feathers op. I just never thought of the brakes squeeling (especially on a truck) as being that big of an issue. Good luck with it.

I had a friend with a 08 taco, he had a piece of a retaining spring break off inside the drum. the piece was supppppper small..but it was enough to just rub against the drum causing the noise. maybe those techs should take a closer look...

    Edit:
p.s. most shops over look vehicles that come in for warranty work..most of the time they just want to get them in and out asap..

ya okay good luck with that.
you have at least 15k more miles to go and hope that your truck is out of service for 30 days... and on top of it them giving you a pile of shit to drive while out of service.

    ya.. defiantly a lemon.

I thought I was only one that had the front brake squealing problem.
It only happens when I come to a stop slowly and only at the tail end of the stop, never at the beginning. This probably started when the truck only had 20k on it and now it has 33k and still squeals.

Are you sure it's your front brakes? What you are describing sounds like the rear brake squeal. The tail end of stopping.

Go to a different dealer. Could've been the same tech looking over your truck for the past few visits. Something like incorrect assembly or a broken part would've been difficult for him to catch.

Another option is to use aftermarket brake shoes from Raybestos or Wagner. They are only about $50 for the set at RockAuto.com.

Maybe another member will chime in - is there a proportioning valve or something that can adjust the front/rear brake bias? Seems odd your brake shoes are glazed, when the rear brakes are typically used so lightly. (It's not unusual to go 40k on a set of shoes.)

Wow! That would have been the first thing I did. Perhaps you should ask for that specifically. I can't see them fighting you too much......well, maybe I can:(

If this was out of warranty and you took it to Midas, I bet they would tell you it needs shoes and the drums turned. Why the dealer wouldn't start there is beyond me. If your truck sounds like a "city trash truck", that is.

No proportioning valve, they use electronic brake force distribution which is integral with the ABS.

Had three NEW Tacomas (Off Road 4WD): 2001, 2005, 2010 and none of them had any rear brake issues or noises.

The 2005 had a front pad area squeal that started at 8,000 miles and they could never solve it, as it wasn't constant. It went away with the first set of new pads changed, and never made a noise again.

Like the OP said, this sounds like the rear brake squeal. My '09 DCSB did it and I thought it was the front as well. I replaced pads and rotors at 45K miles, but it was still there. Then, listening more closely I realized it was the rear.

My '12 does it as well.

It only does it at the tail end of a complete stop, only if I am braking lightly, and it is not very loud. Since my '09 did it as well under the exact same circumstances, I have come to terms with it being a characteristic of the vehicle. Some do it, some don't, and some do it louder than others.

I had a '77 280Z 2+2 once that had a very similar characteristic on the front brakes. When they stretched the design to fit the rear seats in, it threw something off balance enough to cause a resonant frequency. I had to live with it.

It's not a safety hazard, but if it's bugging you, going with a different pad might help.

My rear brakes on my 2011 squeeled since day one. I took the drums off and hit the pads with sand paper. It still does it, its just not too bad. My windshield whistle noise at high speeds and the blower motor noise was much more irritating. Both have since been fixed Via the TSB's.
