Well I'm not too proud to admit failure...it didn't come out the way I hoped. Showed too much chrome, then I hit it with some matte clear and it came out too opaque

Gonna strip it and try the actual Plastidip clear. Should have just ordered it online and did it right the first time around.

Cut your losses and get some color matched paint.

LOL what losses? I just sprayed 3 coats of clear on it...definitely can be stripped with some rust-oleum clear coat remover.

I'm very bad at painting, in fact it's probably the only area around cars and parts I know nothing about and have no skill at. The whole point of this mod was to give members the confidence to paint match their chrome stuff to SSM knowing they can just remove it if they mess up. Anybody can color match with real spray paint, but this just seemed like a cool alternative, and by the looks of it, it actually works!

I can't wait to see those pics. In fact, I just ordered 3 cans of clear plastidip.

This is what I used. I also bought a can of adhesion promoter which was damn near $20. I scuffed the chrome with sandpaper really well, sprayed several layers of adhesion promoter, then duplicolor primer several times, wet sanded, then the duplicolor SSM match several times, then several coats of clear. I should have wet sanded after the SSM then sprayed it with clear and buffed it, but I didn't care if it shined as much as the rest of the truck. nobody notices the difference in luster.

    Here's a pic

looks good trachito. but i think everyone is interested in the plastidip/clear for the ease of use and cost. Don't need so many steps to scuff/primer/wetsand/ etc. I think yours came out great however. and if this clear plastidip doesnt work as I want it, I may be following your steps.

after seeing both results, I think I am buying a used chrome grill, clear plastidipping it and putting on my truck temporarily, and then doing the real paint process on my own grill, then swapping them back out.
