So, the other morning, I unlocked just the driver door with the keyfob (one press of the unlock button), opened the door, locked the door with the lever, started the engine, and closed the door.

ALL the doors unlocked when I closed the door!

The dealership indicated there are many things that can be programmed, but this is quite odd.

2011 double-cab, TRD sport with JBL, V6 auto PreRunner.

Any body else have this same condition?

Is it true that the dealership would have to probe the ECU to find the options to be programmed on a per-vehicle basis?

Likely a safety feature to keep you from locking yourself out.

Same reason many vehicles disable the door lock switch when the door is open (unlock still works), and you can't lock the doors using the key fob when a door is open.

The "can't lock yourself out" thinking goes WAY back. I had a '76 Datsun pickup with the old style plunger lock pegs and you could not lock the door with them when it was open. The only way to lock the doors was from the inside with the plunger, or from the outside with the key.

My '69 Buick was locked by pushing the button down, then closing the door while holding the outside door button in. If the outside button wasn't pressed while closing, the door would unlock (not power, it was all mechanical).

Very common safety function used my MOST (not all) manufacturers. It's a good idea in my opinion. As mentioned, it keeps you from accidentally locking the vehicle with the engine running (or on) and exiting the vehicle.

Tried it on my wife's '04 Rav4 today and it allowed me to lock it from the door switch, doors remained locked when we closed both doors.

I know the '08 4-Runner company car that I had would not lock with the doors open.
Don't remember what my '03 Tundra did.

My doors do not automatically lock or unlock. I asked the dealership if this was an option, they told me the would have to read the ECU itself to see which options could be programmed.
