Just finished making a spare tire carrier that slides up and down the rails from 2 6" stainless steel carriage bolts 1/2 diameter, 4 washers, 4 locking nuts, and 2 regular nuts. I'll take some pics when i get home tonight but so far its holding up pretty good. The bolts line up alomst perfect with two holes. After shane didn't wanna help me out I thought up this which i was pretty proud of myself for saving 80-90 bucks.

i was thinking bout putting a bar so its spaces it out evenly enough. The size of the tire the bolts are pushing the tire down so its not just sitting their.

i'd definitely put something to keep the bolts spaced out, one on the track and one up close to the back of the rim

Except for the fact he has an 70# missile behind his passengers head that will most likely take flight should an accident occur.

IMO one side of the bed rail system is not sufficient to secure a tire. Mine is bent like crazy just from normal use.

Criminal and civil charges can occur should something fly off a vehicle in NY during an accident. God forbid anyone gets hurt or killed the driver can actually be charged with manslaughter or vehicular assault.

I see guys with spare tires every day mounted on roof racks with a POS ratchet strap holding it in place and they make me cringe.

Need to remember/take into consideration inertia when putting heavy items on trucks.

    ^^ Dead on.

PM SnwTaco and ask him about his spare setup. He's got a similar spare mount that he paid for and he ripped the sheetmetal of his bedsides just from the weight of the tire moving around in Pismo.

It still has no place on the bedrails, let alone with cheap hardware.

I used stainless steel grade 8 bolts so Its not cheap hardware and for around 20 bucks and its easy to change i have basically nothing invested. I might run it flat against the front of the bed since it doesn't block my field of view. I do have a locked up with a pretty thick combo lock. The reason i put it on here was to get feed back negative feed always helps improve the system

I think you might have your metals confused.
If you have stainless bolts, you probably have 18-8 stainless, which is not grade 8. Stainless bolts have a minimum yield strength of 40-90k psi. Grade 8 bolts have a minimum yield strength of 130k psi and are made of a carbon alloy steel.
