Yeah if you choose to ignore it!!

If you apply the principles that iroh is describing in conjunction with reading the vacuum gauge you will boost fuel mileage. But you can't ignore these principles, unless, of course you objective is not to save fuel.

Only you can make that choice.

V6 power at 2000 rpm is similar to your 4 cylinder's output when it's nearing 3000 rpm.

Mileage-wise, this is the ONE advantage to a larger engine. I can follow the rules of a hypermiler and no one is the wiser. Unfortunately, still burning more gas all the time than I would with the 4.

Given the torque of the 4 and the weight of the truck, I'd probably shift around 2500 in traffic and keep the 2000 rpm shifting to the empty roads.

An Ultragauge costs less than a vacuum gauge at this point, and tells a whole lot more.

And it's actually a "performance indicator" or at least that's what Chrysler called it in the mid 60s on 300s and New Yorkers.

I keep the rpms below 2000 with excellent results. A vacuum gauge would tell me I'm doing it wrong, I accelerate around 3/4 throttle.

LOL, the car doesn't even need to be that little. My Subie gets 20 mpg in the city with aggressive 4000-rpm upshifts. The one tank that included a 90-mile trip at 75 mph got me 25 mpg.

I drive 47 miles each way to work every day. 6 miles through the city @ 50mph with 5 stops; 41 miles of highway with 4 stops. If I keep it under 2000rpm and 65 mph, I get about 21mpg. If I run at 70mph, 17mpg. If I pay no attention to speed, safety, or red line, I get 15.5 mpg.
