I have a 2008 Tacoma Doublecab SR5 with a V6 motor. I've recently noticed that when the motor is idling or when driving, I hear a faint "clunking" noise from the motor area. It is especially apparent from a cold start (or shortly thereafter) around the 500-900 RPM range. It is a non-rhythmic "clunking" noise to the tune of "clunk, clunk, clunk........clunk...clunk, clunk......................clunk".

The truck idles fine and the transmission appears to shift without any performance issues.

As a side note, the exhaust has a "burnt" electrical odor for a short time when starting from a cold start. That is a new "symptom" I've not previously noticed.

Before I take it to Toyota, can anyone provide any insight or suggestions?

    Thanks.

    Yes
Is your exhaust cracked/broken? Maybe it is hitting somewhere and making the clunking noise?

Not being too mechanically inclined, am I looking for visible cracks (or other signs of damage)? Where should I look?

    Thanks.

Just follow your exhaust from the motor to the end. Look for anything out of place. It sounds to me like something is just rattling around and not the motor itself. If you say it does it during idling then you should be able to pin point where the noise is coming from.
