extend the oil change with synthetic oil

And if I live in tropical weather where the winter doen't exist, is it better to use 5W40 instead of 5W30? Will the 5W30 be better for MPG?

 

I would not use anything heavier than 5w30 in any gasoline engine.

5w40 is for Diesel engines.

Lets remember guys, the time constraint ...

The recommended interval (for the 1GR) is every 8000 km (5 thousand miles) or every 6 months, whichever comes first.

For those of us who do our own services and get less than 5000 miles every 6 months, the time interval is critical during the warranty period. If something goes wrong and you don't have documentation stating you did the services every 6 months, regardless of the mileage, your warranty may be deemed void by Toyota.

Personally, I get much less than 5000 miles in a year but I will still do an oil and filter change with full synthetic every 6 months (spring and fall) as per Toyota's recommendation. I could care less if I'm called fanatical on my maintenance because the oil coming out of the drain plug looks the same as the stuff coming out of the jug ...

Rather then starting a new thread i figured Id post here. I just changed to Mobil 1 EP and plan to run at longer intervals. I am at 30K and have the extended to 125K, I figure if I am ever denied a claim due to the longer intervals, it would be backed by Mobil 1 EPs warranty for 15K miles (I will probably change every 10K).

Edit: I drive about 180 miles a day, all highway, little traffic.

 

My wife and I have "Toyota Care" on our 2012's. Free maintenance for 2 years or 25,000 miles. No Toyoguard and no additional cost.

 

You won't be.

Mobil says to stick with manufacturer-recommended intervals during warranty.
Also, read the fine print in your 125k extended. Extended warranties are not "warranties"... they are service contracts. They are not covered by Manusson-Moss, and if the policy says 5k, it means 5k... not 5k unless synthetic or not 5k unless Mobil says 15k.

But Mobil absolutely does NOT have your back while you are still under warranty.

UOA looks great... holds viscosity very well (though would be nice to see a VOA for comparison).

But 10k intervals are not an issue... and really doesn't need the M1 "EP" tagged products. Additionally, Toyota supports 10k intervals for the 2012 and later model 2.7 engines running 0w20 synthetic.

The Mobil 1 Extended Performance limited warranty is valid for 15,000 miles or your vehicle’s OEM recommended oil change interval, whichever is longer. You do bring up a good point of Manusson-Moss, I will have to check the wording of the service contract.
