I started my truck this morning and it was idling at around 1800rpm. I thought it might go down after a minute so I just sat there. It dropped down a bit but not much. I started driving hoping it would get better when it warmed up. When coming to a stop I pushed the clutch in to put it into neutral and it would drop down to about 900rpm and then go back up to about 1300rpm and then settle at 1100rpm. It did that every time I stopped. Thoughts?

Yeah, I was just thinking if it's not doing it when I take it in, then what do I get them to check?

Something similar happen to me a couple months ago. I reason that it might have been bad gas because I got gas from a shady looking gas station way out in the boondocks. I ran that tank down dried and filled it back up. Its been 3 mths and no idling issue since.

The fan was on low, the heat was on full, and the position was on window defrost/feet. I'm pretty sure the light on the A/C button was off. When I drive home I'll check again and post. I haven't done anything I haven't done before and I don't ever remember it doing this.

Just drove home. Again it was idling at 1800 rpm when I first started it and slowly went down. And the same thing happened when coming to a stop except it would go from 900 back up to 1800 rpm before coming back down to 1000ish.

Our engine computers suck at learning. The last time I disconnected the battery it took over a week before the idle straightened out and well over a thousand for the ignition timing to get back to where it's supposed to be (I watch it on the Ultra-gauge).

If you don't have your foot off the gas pedal early enough you'll run into the drive-by-wire delay and that'll let it surge too.

LOL! Gremlins... those definitely come as standard equipment, no extra charge.

Seriously, the first two days after I had the battery disconnected for the cruise install it idled at 2000 rpm at a stop! Most car companies have a fairly decent program to add adjustments to as the computer learns. Nooo not Toyota. They just said screw it, just tell it to add fuel and spark and it'll figure the rest out eventually.

I'm thinking it's your A/C compressor kicking in if you have window defroster/feet selected. The A/C runs with this as well with defrost even though the A/C light is not on

i vote for the a/c kicking on and off as well since your defroster and ac run together. turn off the defroster and see what happens. on another note, ive been looking at the new scion frs and apparently some are having the same type of idle issues and it is a problem with the ecu.

I tried it with heat on, everything off, and a/c on, no change between any of them.

Are you taking into account the different idle at speed? When stopped the engine will idle at 700 rpm, but if you're going over 5 mph it will idle between 1100-1400 rpm depending on if the AC compressor is running.

It is a true pain in the butt sometimes.

Doesn't sound normal to me, 1800 at startup, mine does that, but after it's warmed up, idle is never above 900 with and without AC cycling. Sounds more like a sensor problem, like a MAF or TPS, more like a TPS though. Take it in.
