Mine was a 13 DC SB V6 4x4 TRD OR + Tow for 30,800 before ttl.

The OP's deal is fair, it's his own fault for dropping 30k without fully understanding what he's getting not the dealers. If the tow package is that important just add it on, cost about $600 on a $30k+ vehicle seems like a no brainier to me.

Tow package is optional, but I have never, ever in four years working at a Toyota dealer seen a Tacoma V6 SR5 or TRD without it.

The Off Road and the Tow package includes a heavy duty battery (not necessarily bigger). Toyota's website doesn't give a lot of information on this supposed HD battery. The standard tow package does not include a different battery.

    this ^^^

My guess is: when ordered and the SR5 or TRD box is checked...the tow package adds in automatically. Many RPO's are like that when placing factory order.

    V6 Tow Package: $650.00
    Class-IV Towing Receiver Hitch,
    Transmission & Supplemental Oil Coolers,
    130A Alternator, Heavy Duty Battery,
    7-Pin Connector w/ Converter,
    Trailer Sway Control

    .
Definitely get the tow package even if you don't plan on towing, the bigger alternator means you can run accessories like lights without a problem, and the class III hitch is good for anything up to the tow limit of your truck.

Plus the extra transmission cooling is the most important part of the package.

Don't just let them throw on a hitch and an plug and call it the "towing package". You can do that much yourself much cheaper.

If added by the dealer, would the truck still legally be able to tow 6500lbs as the sticker from factory would be still 3500 or whatever it is without towing package?

When I had a 2010 SR5 V6 it did not have the tow package. On my 2013 Sport, they 'said' that all the new Sports come with the tow package, as did mine.

Yeah, Heavy Duty/stronger is what I meant by 'bigger'.

I'm a little confused by the rest of your post though, you first say that the tow package includes a HD battery, but then you say it doesn't include it. All I know is that my Sport with a tow package did include the HD battery. If I get a chance I'll run out and get the details off the battery.

the towing package is a stand alone RPO

however, I suspect that it is an automatic RPO when ordering the TRD Sport or Off Road packages.

I've ordered vehicles in the past, and watched as the sales mgr clicked option boxes...many times, other RPO's would automatically fill in when certain options are chosen.

On Toyota's website they list 2 different tow packages. One is just the tow package, the other is the tow package with the Off Road package. The HD battery is only listed on the OR tow package. Who knows, their website is kind of confusing with the packages and no one's to say they don't put the HD battery in every tow package at the factory anyways so you might be right.
V6 Tow Package [9] for Off-Road Package: Class-IV towing receiver hitch, transmission and supplemental oil coolers, 130-amp alternator, heavy duty battery, 7-pin connector with converter, Trailer-Sway Control (TSC)

V6 Tow Package [9]: Class-IV towing receiver hitch, transmission (automatic transmission only) cooler, engine oil cooler, 130-amp alternator, heavy-duty battery, 7-pin connector with converter and Trailer-Sway Control (TSC)

    You're right, I mis-read

I just checked, the battery in my Sport with the tow package is 710 CCA, with a 165 minute reserve. Personally, I don't consider 710 to be especially 'heavy duty', but that's what it is.

Not sure how that compares to the 'standard' battery, but maybe someone without the tow package could check for comparison?

    Always been available here.

As far as the tow package, they've either changed something or its regional specific when I got my 09 in the Northeast both the Sport and OR packages had the tow package.

Yes the two packages have different codes Tow (TO) and Tow Offroad (TW)
the difference if I remember correcly has to do with a conflict with the Offroad package the tow package itself is the same.
