I'm presuming this is possible but wanted to make sure. I found a deal on a used MTR that I can run as a spare. I've seen plenty of people run a 285/70/17 as a spare, the question is can it be done with an aftermarket wheel. Ideally I'd like to run the same wheel that I have and rotate the spare along with the other tires.

The wheel I have is 17X9 with a 5.5" BS.

    Has anybody done this?

I don't think the wheel would affect the spare fitting unless the hole between the lug nuts is too big for the spare tire bracket to hold. If that is the case then the easiest way to find out would be to just measure the two.

If people can fit a 285/70/17 then I don't see why you couldn't on any rim. Typically rim width doesn't affect tire size very much (unless they are drastic differences maybe), but 1.5" isn't too much of a difference.

    Thanks for the reply.

The center bore hole would be the same, so that shouldn't be an issue. I didn't think it would be a problem, but with my luck I would get everything done and something wouldn't fit right. So, I thought I would ask first.

Are you running 285/70R17's currently? If so just take one off and try to fit it in the spare spot.

That's what I'm running now and that's a great idea!

Here's a quick update to the thread. I chopped off the brackets for the spare and put in one of my 285/70/17s. It's really close to the exhaust and it touches the mount for the spring. It also hangs really low.

    Here are some pictures:

    Really close to the exhaust:

The hanger is wedged in between the tread:

It hangs below the bottom of the hitch:

So the tire fits, but it's pretty much wedged in there. I'm mainly worried about how close it is to the exhaust. There are a number of you guy who are running this size spare. Is your fitment similar? Any problems with the exhaust or the tire getting caught up anywhere?

    Thanks.

i had my exhaust cut off just after it goes over the axle, so it is still pointed down and not running next to my 255/85/16. Flex it and see if the diff hits the tire, if so strap it to the hitch or depressurize it slightly

I am looking to get some 275/70/17's and was wondering about spare tire fit in stock location. Don't have tires yet so can't try. Thanks for starting this tread and checking the fit.

If you cut your exhaust, hanging up on things when your wheeling looks like it may be the only problem. What I did on my other truck was put the spare in the bed when wheeling. Trucks are limited for departure angle anyway so the extra tire width is definately a concern.

I put one of these in the middle of my bed and just bolted the tire down - no problems with it flying around. http://usaprogrip.com/products_detail.php?id=156 I didn't use the eye bolt that came with it, i just used a regular bolt/washer.

I was doing some reading on ttora and quite a few of the second gen guys are running this particular setup and haven't had any issues. They did say the tire is close to the exhaust but it doesn't burn through. I'm going to give it a try and keep a close eye on it. I'll keep the thread updated.

Hello TRDTaco... Any update? I am actually going to try to put my 285/70/17 duratrac to replace my OEM spare myself. Just wondering if you ran into heat problems with the exhaust?

Any other issues you ran into?

I ended up buying a tire carrier for the bed. I'd like to get the bed back so I'm going to try putting the tire under the truck again. I'll try to remember to post up some results when I actually get around to doing this.

A slew of pricey stuff my wife hates me for.
I'm running a matching full size spare, and at the nearest opportunity it'll find a new permanent home. Departure angle is everything on this friggin limo I call a truck.
