best way to defrost?

    No risk at all. It is how the defroster is typically intended to operate.

    Your A/C is running anyway because it's taking the humidity out of the air as it pumps air into the defrost vent. You can take the knob off and turn it over one more setting and it'll pump hot air straight up to the vent rather than being dehumidified. At least that's the explanation I've read but I have taken the knob and turn it.
