OK, 2010 regular cab 4 squirrel Tacoma.

Shifter has D, 3, 2, 1..but it almost feels like it has a 5th gear. Noticed it Sunday night driving home from Rob Zombie that I was at 80 and only around 2000rpm. My 2006 Colorado would be close to 3000 at that point if not over.

Do I have the 4 or 5 speed? How can one tell?

Ditto, I also have a 2010 and have noticed the same thing. While I'm sure I have a 4 speed it feels like a 5 speed. Perhaps what I'm thinking is 5th gear is the torque converter locking up?

The torque locking up will definitely feel like another gear along with an RPM drop..

Yes that is the Torque converter locking up so it kind of acts like a 5th gear. The 4 cylinder autos only come with the 4 spd. Only the V6's have the 5spd auto.

The 5spd can lock up in both 4th and 5th, so your's may also lock up in 3rd, not sure though. Should be something in the neighborhood of a 500 rpm drop, it will vary though.

Locking up allows the torque converter to not build up as much while cruising for long periods. Heat is what kills auto tranny's.

when the torque converter locks up it becomes a true 1 to 1 ratio between the flywheel and the transmission. when its not locked there is some loss in transfer of power

I was figuring mine had a 4 speed, just b/c it had D-3-2-1. That said, if you remember the 3rd gen Mustang AOD tranny, that shifter was missing a gear (I believe 2nd), so I figured it's possible.
