So I have an '08 Tacoma. It has the normal little turn knob 4x4 option.
So what my question/concern is if you can put the truck into 4wheel drive while it is moving... Kinda new to the Tacoma scene so just curious. I'm in Alaska and I hate stopping and putting it in N and then switching it over whenever I go into a parking lots and stuff.
My F150 I have I can just flip it over right as I'm driving along and I'm curious if anyone knows if you can do that or not on these Tacoma's.
    Thanks in advance.

you can flip it into 4H while driving.. as long as you're something like under 55. Personally, if you need 4x4 and you're going 55+, you should probably slow down.
4Low though you should pretty much be at a complete stop.
There should be a little gray card in your sun visor that explains all of it too.

You can shift on the fly into 4HI as long as you are travelling less than approx 50 mph , to shift into 4LO , you need to stop and put it in N , shift into 4LO and carry on

When shifting into 4HI while moving it's best to back off the throttle as you shift into and out of 4HI so that the drivetrain isn't under load

You can shift into 4x4 high but its best if you are stopped or going at low speeds

It shouldn't have engaged. If the light was flashing that means it wasn't on. You should be ok.
