the overall height of the wheel and tire combo will give you more ground clearance. It is more based on the tires since you can put several different sized tires on say a 16" wheel.

Look at it this way OP, you know where the axle meets the wheel (you know, at the center of it) the distance from the center (hub cap) to the ground is how high your hub cap is. So if you have 30" tires, your hubcap sits 15" off the ground. IF you had 40" tires the center of the hubcap would measure in at 20" off the ground.

(for those who already get this I understand that the differentials and crossmember sit lower than the center of the wheel, I just want to give him a simple visual)

Taller tire means more ground clearance at the axle, however a "suspension lift" will raise the body of the vehicle up higher and yet provide no more ground clearance. It is simply done to try and fit taller tires in the wheel well

I agree, there are stupid people and then there are people who aren't informed yet. STUPID people are douchebags who are incapable of considerate thought. Uninformed persons may very well be fully capable of grasping a subject and just haven't ever researched it yet. Give the kid a chance to grow up and learn some, either answer the question or move along. Only STUPID people would waste their time trolling to be a jerk. But what do I know, I'm not a master mech for Toyota so I know less than someone out there, therefore I must be stupid.

And there's intelligent, educated people who are new to Tacoma trucks and wonder the same thing as those who ask questions. I read this article, learned the process a bit, and now feel better informed when I go shopping for new tires.

    Good question OP.

There is a balance to it. By all means the same old questions to get tiring, but if someone is new to the whole shebang just direct them and let them know that there are search options that may help in the process of their research.

OP, sorry for the sidetrack haha have we answered your question thoroughly?
