Do the rims or tires give the lift? My friends saying the rim does but I can't see how that works and it doesn't make sense to me. Is he right or am I wrong?

tire(not wheels or rims) but the tires do give some lift. most your lift comes from the suspension.

Can some one elaborate because he's saying my 18 inch rims from my 16 inch rims is what's making it lifted. Because he sees less tire because of the 18 inch rim taking up most of the tire so hes thinkin therefore it's not the tire that's causeing the lift.

18” wheels with a tire thats the same hight will not give any more lift than a 16”. only if the tires are the same hight.(lets say 30” are what was on with 16” if you have a 30” tire with the 18”s it has the same ride hight.

no problem man! just kinda ignore all the stupid posts. some guys get annoyed at threads and just like to troll. instead of help witch is what the forum is for.

also say you have like 31’s if you did a 3” suspension lift and got bigger tires like a 33” you would get about 1” to 1.5” of lift from the tires. no matter if you had 16” wheels or 18” wheels tire is 2” or so taller but you only get half that in lift because only half of that is under the wheel other half is over/ on top of it.

so 33” is 2” taller than a 31” but you only gain half that in lift.

It's true that a 33" tire is 33" tall regardless of its rim size.

If you look at P-Metric tire sizing,
    A P265/70R16 is 30.6" diameter
    A P265/70R17 is 31.6" diameter
    A P265/70R18 is 32.6" diameter

For a given section width and sidewall aspect ratio, a larger rim gives you more height. Of course you could keep the same rim size and change the other parameters to get a taller tire too. Too many variables, which is why I answered either, or both.

The suspension gives the room for a larger diameter tire that gives you more ground clearance.
Increase in ground clearance = larger tire diameter - smaller tire diameter / 2
