I got a call yesterday from Patt Lobb, saying that they need my 2008 for a trade in and would get me in a newer truck for less than I am paying now. Should I bite? Or is this just going to waste my time and piss me off?

Impossible. The math doesn't add up. It has to be a lease, have a longer payment schedule, or the interest rate has to be like double digits difference (very unlikely). IMO, car dealerships are not in the business of selling cars as much as lending money.

Check it out for sure, doesn't cost you anything to see the numbers.

A VW dealer called about my 2012 VW GLI. Said they wanted the car because the colour and manual transmission were very rare, and they had 2 customers interested.

They also just so happened to have my new 2011 TRD recently traded in.

They made me a great deal on the truck and I am happy to be back in a Tacoma.

I tried to trade my GLI in on a 2013 Tacoma and could only get 18-20 in trade in on a $34,700 TRD Quad Cab from a Toyota Dealership.

They ended up giving me 22 for my GLI on trade in, and the 2011 Tacoma was only 30,000 with low mileage.

Toyota dealers are notorious for that around here also. Before I even owned any Toyota's we got letters, "our records show you own one or more select used cars that we are looking for.... yada yada".

At the time, the most valuable car we had was an eight year old beat and scratched up Mitsubishi Galant.

There is nor harm in seeing the numbers and what they have to offer. You can always say no.

    I'd take a look.

Tacoma's tend to hold their value pretty well. Plus, interest rates are (probably) lower now than they were when you bought it, and your credit rating should have improved some since then. On top of that, you've got your equity in the truck now, and you should be well rightside up - bringing the amount you have to borrow on the new truck down.

So, you may very well get a new truck for lower monthly payments than you are currently paying.

The catch ? You'll pay more in interest. You're basically extending your loan, and so you'll pay for all those extra months of payments. Plus the other costs of the trade : Tax, Title, License and so on.

Is it worth it ? Maybe it is, maybe it isn't.

Tell them to send you the details in an email. If they won't, I wouldn't waste your time unless you have nothing better to do.

+1. Go to any vehicle fansite forum and you will see the exact same question asked multiple times. It's just a trick to get sales.

Dealers will never buy a vehicle unless they can sell it for more. Salesmen looking to push their numbers try to turn one sale into two by getting previous customers to trade in their 'old' vehicle for something newer. They sell you a brand new truck, then sell your 'old' one for top-dollar to someone else. This trick pays off double with the current market; dealers get lots of incentives from manufacturers for selling new cars because the new car market is down, but the used market high so they can sell older cars for nearly what a new one is worth. Win-win for greedy dealers!

    back to bone stock.
this..discussing monthly payments is like a shell game..they get you distracted looking for the pea under the walnut shell..you forget to think about final cost. nothing gets a salesman more flustered than walking in with a business calculator..fucks them up.

buying my wife's camry..they kept saying..your payments will be $xxx.xx...i would click away and say..hey!! that is more than sticker price!!..

know and understand how interest works..mumble things like "P given A" while clicking away on the calculator. in the end,,they just ask you what you want. be smart about it. they prey on the weak math'd :D

Fraud. My dad got one of these calls about his civic and the dealer was reporting that it had 76,000 miles. Little did they know it had 250k at the time.
