I need some help. I need someone to explain to me the difference between PreRunner and 4WD, and which is best for certain situations. Thanks in advance.

I talked myself out of getting 4WD, and went with the Prerunner, instead. Pretty much the only time I'd "need" 4WD is going to the beach, and that rarely happens anymore. If you're planning to go offroad on a regular basis, then get the 4WD. If not, the Prerunner will be fine.

Alright, thanks. I did go with the PreRunner because I am in the same boat as you on the not needing 4WD very often. The only thing is, is that I work at a mine and the roads out here can get really bad if it rains and i was wondering if the prerunner has any type of 4WD type suspension or anything also.

    Quoted for truth!

Same frame, same suspension. If you're going to just do a side by side comparison, aside from the intial cost, I can't see any conditions in which a 2wd would be more beneficial than a 4wd. Not hating on the Prerunners but I'd rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it.

That being said, the Prerunners, because of their lack of a front axle, can be lifted using spindle lifts. They also don't have the maintenance concerns of 4wd (cv's, torn boots, differential and x-fer case). They will get slightly better fuel economy but nothing substantial in my opinion. But, if you need 4wd, there's no substitute.

Im not planning on taking it in the woods or anything like that, just because i am a puss and dont wanna get it scratched up after just buying it. I have just heard that the PreRunner has certain aspects like that of the 4WD, and i was wondering if that was true or not. I know it doesnt have the diff. or anything like that though.

lol if i had a dollar for every time someone posts this question....

Anyways, pre-runner is exactly same as the 4wd except it is 2wd. Same suspension, brakes axles, everything is same. (I'm pretty sure) If you go to the snow alot then get the 4wd. To me it is worth every cent, and rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it.
But i do not know if you are asking this because you are in the market for another truck or not.
Pre-runners are easier to lift and slap LT suspension and take it to the sand. They stand as tall as the 4wd models, as opposed to regular 2wd trucks with 5 lugs.
Tacoma Pre-runners would have 6 lugs i believe.
There are sport/off-road pre-runners from Toyota (TRD, you know) which are exactly same as the 4wd TRD sport/ off road models, except they do not have that front axle.
So here ya go, hope this helps, and btw, i'm not sure if you know, but some people here can be harsh on questions like this, and talk lotta shit (Might give you crap for it) but try to use the search function on the site. I know you can find the answer to your question. I guarantee it! (But i'm sure you already know) Gluck Bud.

The Prerunner is the same as the 4wd, just no transfer case of front axle... The Prerunner TRD Off Road will have a locking rear differential and everything. The TRD Prerunners have the same suspension as the TRD 4x4 counterparts.

You'll be fine with the pre-runner. There were a couple of them at the Rausch Creek meet over the summer and they did fine on the Green Trails. Now if you're doing serious off-roading, snow & or mud, then you probably want the 4wd. Otherwise, being in Alabama, the pre-runner is probably fine. ;)

Tacoma is stock and staying that way, Pickup is TBA as of now.
4x4 just so you have it, unless you are gonna slam your truck and turn it into a full-time pavement pounder, get 4x4.
