I am looking at a 6cyl Tacoma with 92 thousand miles on it.How can I tell if the timing belt has been changed ? At the back of the fan there is a part that is painted pink. Is that indicative of anything?

    Thanks

4.0 has a timing chain, and doesn't need to be changed

Also, I think all tacoma factory fans are pink ;)

I assume he's talking about 05+ because he's in the 2nd gen tacoma section.

Funny thing about Toyota. If it's an interference motor they use a chain. And if it's a clearance motor the will use a belt.
The idea being that a clearance motor if the belt breaks the car will just stop running. The pistons won't hit the valves.

In an interference motor if it should break the pistons would hit the valves and cause major damage. That's why Toyota uses a chain.

    Just FYI.

Historically, yes, but that ceased to be true around 1998 or 1999.
The 4.7 used in the 1st Gen Tundra (basically a Lexus engine) was absolutely an interference engine, as well as the 1st Gen Tacoma V6.

Thanks for the replies. It's a 2008, 6 speed. Any particular problems I should look for at 92,000 miles?

I thought the 3.4 was a non interference motor

Some stuff. Not a lot, just some.
The 3.4 is non interference and has a belt. The 4.7 is interference and has a belt.
