Are you 4wd? I don't believe there are any 4.30 gears for the front clamshell yet.

Junk yards are 2 hrs away both ways. And non of them have a tacoma sitting in there.

    Agreed.

I'm convinced my two factory diffs that I blew up went south because of tagging the pinion flange on rocks, deforming the crush sleeve, and subsequent PPL loss.

If it's going to see offroad use, solid collar.

The man himself only uses solid collars unless specifically requested to do otherwise:

I have already decided solid spacer over cruch sleeve. Im 90% sure that is the cause of my problem. So eliminate and over build :D

Yeah... There are no 4.30's for the Toyota 8" Clamshell... Not unless someone came out with some in the last few months though anyway.

Interesting idea on the conversion from sleeve to shim. I would like to research more on the shim method. The only issue I see with having a shop like me is the need to stock a large number of different thickness shims, where with the sleeves, you get one and go. Less stock inventory and expense required. I don't see enough demand in my shop to require going to shims. I can however see how an individual might want his truck done that way, but for a repair facility, it would require larger inventory.

I'm not sure about other brands, but Nitro's master install kit can be purchased with either the solid collar and needed shims or a crush sleeve, as well as bearings. They can be ordered per-customer. Makes life easier.

They also sell the solid collars individually. The image below is the master install kit with bearings and crush sleeve. The solid collar can be seen individually wrapped to the left.

I am curious though on the solid collar. Since every rear end is different, how do you get the correct thickness collar? I would think you would also need shims to go with that collar that goes between the two pinion bearings.

    You do need shims.

The general size is around 2.7 in I believe, with shims to fine tune. Nitro would have the exact numbers though.

OK, so the solid collar is just a portion of the preload adjustment, and there are "shim kits" with several different thicknesses to get the correct measurement? OK. I was curious if that was it since in the photos I was unable to see any shims, just the collar.

Don't feel bad Ghost. You are learning. I have been building rear diffs for about 20 years now, and even I will say that I learn something new. I will say this, one of the things I love about the Toyota rear diff, that I had with the GM 3/4 ton and bigger diffs is the adjustable rings for setting preload and backlash for the ring gear. Saved SOOOO much time and headache. I wish that Toyota would have done the same with their front diffs. I know GM did.

Hahaha aight well thanks yall. I've taken my rear out 3 times just to learn to do it and I put my clutch in so I'm familiar with a few things but I just figured the front would be a lil harder. Of coarse something can seem hard until u do it, then its the easiest thing in the world. Guess ill find out. :D

Nah. It's all still bolts and plugs. Have some RTV on hand to replace any gaskets that may get to' up during the process, and maybe a couple extra c-clips for the CV axles (they break sometimes), but that's about it.
