I have a 2012 Tacoma SR5 4x4 and am thinking about adding an ARB locker next year. I have read there are a few rear axles on the Tacoma and do not know what is in my truck. 8.0 or 8.4" e-locker, etc.

What do I need to know when looking for parts for the rear axle AND for the front IRS diff? I will probably put one in the rear axle, but what about in the front? Is this good to have or not really needed?

The factory e locker is actually a smaller diff then the standard diff you have. I feel the ARB locker installed in our non elocker rears is just as good if not better then the factory set up. And, if you get the larger air compressor to run the locker, you will also have on board air if needed. :D

This is not true; they are both 8". 8.4 is a term loosely thrown around to designate a non elocker. Both Ring and pinions are the same size. Op, if you do not have an elocker, an arb is an excellent choice though pricey. As for the front. This is dictated by what you want to do with the truck. I would run it without it unless I have absolutely hit the capability wall. No sense in dropping 2k to the front if you don't need it

Thanks for the information. Yes, I think locker for the rear diff as the first step. Going to try to keep the stock 3.73 ring and pinion because I am running 265/75R16 tires with the V6 and have nothing to tow at this point. I was going to do 4.56:1 gears at both ends and the locker at the same time, but that is a princely sum of money!
