.I would have to flush it to run synthetic, right? I just want to add a little and call it a day.

Modern synthetics are compatible with most conventional fluids so I wouldn't think it would hurt anything, but the flush is super easy. There's a write up if you search. I flushed mine at about 40,000.

Speak of the devil . . . I just flushed mine last night for the first time ever @ 50K miles, and I used the Mobil 1 ATF as posted above. Kind of odd that the manual and reservoir cap both say to use Dexron III or IV ATF (which is red in color), but the stuff that's in there from the factory looks like brake fluid. The pump is a little quieter now when at full left/right lock.

Mine seems a little smoother as well. Mine wasn't low and didn't necessarily need to be changed, I just did it as preventative maintenance.

This was the exact same situation for me. After I flushed it I thought, "That fluid was fine." Oh, well. I enjoyed just tinkering on the truck and knowing that it won't need it for a long time.

My steering was getting a little stiff and (based on this thread) I did a flush in hopes that my power steering pump is ok. Fluid was gnarly! Totally black, no sunlight would penetrate it. New fluid helped, but steering is still stiff and every so often there is a chalky sounding squeak when turning that sounds like it’s behind the brake pedal. I’m guessing it’s the pump, but any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks!

Sounds like the joints in the steering intermediate shaft may be seizing up, @TnShooter can probably post a picture and link.

Oh man. Never messed with that before. Thanks. Is that a lubrication issue, or will I have to replace it?

I’d take a look and see if it is rusted first.
Then soak it with some penetrating oil.
If that helps your problem, then you’ve bought yourself some time until you can get it fixed.

As for the power steering fluid, I just used stand fluid. I didn’t use anything special.

If some penetrating lube helps loosen it up great, but if it gets sticky again I'd replace it. Don't keep spraying it over and over

    I agree.
Spraying it down is just buying yourself time.

Thanks for the info! I’ve had a ton of rust issues. Evidently this truck spent most of its life in Saskatchewan and wasn’t very well maintained. I’ll keep you posted!

I'm going to do a flush on my prerunner soon. Has anyone used the maxlife ATF fluid?

Been using maxlife for 100k without any problems. I flush it once per year.
