So I'm wanting to black out my tail lights and my tailgate is jammed. I want to take it off just to do this if its an easy process. I realllllly don't wanna have to go to Toyota for them to do it. The latch is stuck and the handle doesn't work at all anymore. Is this an easy fix? Or should I take it in?

The side latches might be rusted closed. Try some penetration oil sprayed with it's straw to get into the left and right latches... handle mechanism too.

Give it a bit of time to soak through.

And if that doesnt work take of the cover on the inside of the tailgate, if it has the plastic liner your going to need Torx socket to take that off and then after you take the cover off there's like nine or so screws you have to take out and your golden. You will see all the guts of the door latch, spray it down with WD-40 or any other lubricant like WD. it should come free.

Good answer, I was wondering if it can be taken off while closed... I thought (without looking at it) it would have been captured by the sides.

    Cool

I had to do this I got rear ended couldn't open my tail gate everything was bent inside. It should be easy for the op if the tailgate isnt damaged. There a possibility that something came loose inside
