I see a lot of people on here complaining about the red dash lights in the 2nd gens. Just wanted to mention that there is probably a reason for it, not just Toyota picking the ugliest color possible. Not that it is extremely applicable to normal night driving in town where you are constantly blinded by oncoming traffic....

Taken from the American Optometric Association:

Red light was used for illumination of the cockpit in post-World War II aircraft because it, like red goggles, did not degrade dark adaptation. The intent was to maintain the greatest rod sensitivity possible, while still providing some illumination for central foveal vision.

I see more people complain about amber than red. Lots of people seem to wanna change to red. Since I have a 2013 I am kinda bumbed out that I have the new white color scheme, even though it looks real nice I wish I had orange, because amber/orange is my favorite color.

Why do people put 12,000 Kelvin HID setups in their headlights and foglights? It's strictly for looks. Yes, it is common knowledge to most that the amber/red gauge lighting was purposely chosen so that it would be less fatigueing on a driver's eyes. Then auto manufacturers realized it didn't look good and vehicle buyers can use the dimmer if the dash lights are too bright which is what is suggested anyway when you drive at night.
