X2. Owned several 4 bangers in the past and can't imagine going back to one after having the 4.0L.

I had an '05 XR and i loved it. Only reason i traded and bought my current '12 4x4 was because of the sand and dirt around here (sometimes snow but rare). But anyways in the XR i was getting around 450 miles per tank (21 mpg) on normal driving. On my 2.7 im only getting about 380 miles per tank (18-19 mpg). So its about 70 miles diff in my case but its all up to you in the end. A reg cab 4.0 would be sweet though if Toyota offered it:D

Both are great engines ... just decided what your needs are and what you are want to spend.

You can't go wrong with either on dependability. My favorite Toyota small truck engine of all time was the old 22r 4 banger.

I have a 4.0 ... but if I was commuting to work a long distance (especially on flat ground) and not towing anything heavy, the 2.7 would be my choice.

FWIW ... if you work a 2.7 hard, the gas mileage gets a lot closer to a 4.0 if you have to keep your foot in it.

My "dream machine choice" ... :) ... but not available ... would be a single cab, short bed ... 4.0 (dreaming of a 4.6) with a S/C on it .. ...:burnrubber:

If you trade your v6 for the 4, you WILL miss the power. It is nice to have when you want it

indeed its all relevent ; if you thrash the 4.0 the same way you do the 2.7 youll still see a diffrence in mileage . put another way if you work the 4.0 like 4.6 8 cyl then you could argue that either they both get the same mileage or the 8 cyl betters the 6 in mileage. if your not towing anything and not commuting alot of miles, carry heavy tools equipment etc. by far the 2.7 is tits. however if your bankrolling big $$$$$$$ by all means get what you want fuel be dammed. like the guy said dependability wise their both top dogs.

You're dreaming if you think you'll get 100 miles more per tank by making that trade.

If you swapped to a five lug - yeah I could see it. But not the 4x4, no way, no how.

Best case according to Toyota info: 3mpgs. With a 20 gallon fillup, that's 60 miles.

And that's if you're driving with a feather foot. The more agressively you drive, the more the mpg difference between an economical engine and a powerful engine vanishes.
