I recently installed white LED daytime running lights / turn signals on my 08 Tacoma. The heat from the old orange 4157A halogen bulbs burnt and melted my factory headlight lenses. I replaced the headlight lenses with black ones and didn't want the bulbs melting them again. Once installed, I got hyper flashing which is common with the lower resistance (ohms) of the LEDs as compared with the filament bulbs. I used 360 degree 3157 LEDs from Putco. They aren't as bright as the filament bulbs during the day, but they look great at dawn or dusk. To fix the hyper flash, I bought an LED load resistor kit, which are 6 Ohm 50 watts resistors. I just spliced them into the DRL / turn signal hot wire and brought that to ground. My turn signals now flash at regular speed.

That socket sure used to take a lot of heat, such a bad design from factory

Yeah, the factory should have run the running lights on one filament and the turn signal on both filaments instead of both filaments on all the time. Maybe it's like that on the newer models??

I had to replace my sockets and bulbs on my '08 a few months ago. A bulb wouldn't even stay in the socket it was so fried.

Do you know if they have these LED's in amber?

I would like to do this mod.

Yes they do. Go to putco.com under the "LED lighting" tab.

They also have the switchback LEDs that are one color when using the DRLs (such as white) and change to another color when using the turn signals (amber).

Chris (csjumper2003) also sells the switchback DRL kit here in the BST marketplace. I would like to try those resistors out though, anywhere I put mine something melts lol.

I would be cautious of how hot those resistors get before I affix them to anything plastic or any existing wiring. Otherwise it looks good.

Couldn't find them on Putco's website. Do an eBay search. Here's what they look like:

Those big white blocks are pretty solid insulators (not plastic). Should be fine. The actual resistor is tiny compared to that thing.

Dang, those switchback lights seem pretty neat, then of course when I started looking, there are a bunch of sources. That leads to which one is better, brighter, and for some, reviews are mixed as to quality. Will watch and wait, to see what or where someone recommends.

I grabbed mine from csjumper2003 but have not installed them yet as I am fighting with the dealer for warranty over the melted headlights , melted wiring sockets and melted wiring .
Chris did mention that the resistor needs to be mounted to metal .
He is making a video on how to install them so you dont have any issues .
Once his installation video comes out , I am going to install mine

When installing led lights, you must install or highly recommended to install a load resistor. But in order for it all to work properly you must install a load resistor for each bulb correct???

My friend had similar types of resistors for a set of aftermarket HIDS... I remember in his case those things get HOT. They ended up melting some wires. You might want to double check where you mounted them.

I very well could be wrong and these are totally different, but I would hate for them to burn thru whatever wire loom they're zipped to.

Edit - just realized this thread is almost two years old.

Do you have running lights from factory or did you just plug then wire the resistor and you're good? Ive done the mod for em cause i don't have factory and idk if ill need to undo it or what. Mine are on the way should be here by the end of the week.
