    Stumbled across this,
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WpInSey5f9g
In the video it shows a 2nd gen tacoma being crashed into a wall, after watching everything flex ie: frame, driveline, ect. A great reason to know the accident history on your next vehicle.

That is pretty cool. Looks like a lot moves to absorb the impact. Def totaled. I wonder how fast that was. maybe 45?

Aparently the truck is traveling at 35mph,
Looks like the doors will open without any difficulty, and the windshield is complete.... maybe limp it home...

Pretty sure that would be a total.

But... it reinforces the solid advice to avoid any salvage title vehicles unless you know personally why it's been branded.

The problem is when the owner just buys it out and does the repair himself... in California, no title transfer = no salvage title.
I could have been in that wreck, AAA would pay me replacement value minus salvage value, and I could jimmy it back together and the title would still be clear for a sale, though the insurance company would likely tag the Carfax.

    The windshield is a surprise.

In part because the body flex didn't pop it, but normally, the passenger airbag breaks it.

Limp that home? Not without a new radiator. MIGHT be able to get it to the side of the road, but it's not going more than a couple hundred feet.

    Ouch.

Not going to be playing piano for a while.

The passenger headrest was particularly disturbing... head still bouncing around with the headrest landing pins-up on the bag, the passenger's head could easily come back forward and jab an eye out.

With the price of fuel, I often wonder if a small car is the way to go, such as a 2 door hatchback (definately not a 3cyl) to save some fuel. Or drive a larger vehicle, pay more for gas, safer in a collision, latest technology to keep you safe. And chances after a crash you will have less down time from injuries, and the safety of your family... ex wife excluded..

I'd rather spend a bit more on gas.
For one thing, even the Smart doesn't get THAT good of mileage given it's miniscule size and complete lack of utility for hauling anything other than a hatbox.

They test well in crash tests... but that is against a brick wall, where the occupants are only experiencing the deceleration of the small, light car.

In an impact with a larger vehicle, rather than going from 40 to 0, like hitting a wall, they go from 40 to 0 to 10 to 0, while the Suburban that hit them goes from 40 to 10 to 0... the small car just became a crumple zone for the SUV.

Mythbusters tested this because Adam believed that a 70mph head-on was the same energy as 140 into a wall, and he was almost wrong. The results surprised them, but they were consistent with physics, because there were two bodies absorbing the energy equally.

But when a 1500lb vehicle hits a 6000lb vehicle, the energy is not absorbed equally. The object with more mass imparts that energy into the smaller object.

    That video made me cry.

Why couldn't they have taken a junkyard '59... or a '59 of a model that nobody cares about like a Fury?

That's crazy how the windshield flexes so much but doesn't crack at all

That truck is definitely totaled. Everything has moved or shifted somehow on that thing. I'll take the Malibu in a car fight.

I'm thinking they disabled it as well for the camera shot. Makes the final results a bit misrepresented though. I have seen many other vehicles side curtains deploy during the tests...so who knows what happened here.

I am impressed by the way the truck takes the impact, and all of the flexing, twisting, crunching, etc. makes me feel that more comfortable driving it.
