Can I inquire how much for the repair? Cause mine is doing the exact same thing, and I suspect the same part is the culprit.

The Tacoma trucks that I have worked on here in the shop have a specific spline index to prevent you from accidentally inserting the two pieces "out-of-clocked" unless you hammer it together. Have they changed them recently?

Anyone have the part number and where to order the part if necessary? Autozone and rockauto.com don't have a steering shaft part for the 2nd gen.

This is the part I ordered from toyotapartszone.com:
    45203-04010 SHAFT SUB-ASSY, STRG
    [TACOMA | 2006 | 2TRFE | 5F | LCB] 1 161.07 161.07

Don't have it yet, it was backordered, but that's the part number (in bold) my search turned up.

but when I do look at the part for mine, it lists that part. LOL

I gis'd the part number and this came up, so im sure it's the right part.

Well, not sure what happened over the weekend, but my truck got worse. I drove it saturday. It sat sunday. When I went to go to work this morning, I almost couldn't even turn the wheel. Decided to make an appointment. Taking it in wednesday morning. I'll report results.

so the dealer called me this morning and said that at worst the upper and lower intermediate shafts were bad. The part isn't close, so im without my truck for a few days. If they upper shaft isn't bad, they can reuse it. I didn't know there was an upper and lower one.
total damage if both are replaced is 850ish. If only the lower, the price goes down about 250 bucks. both prices also include an alignment afterwards.

There is no need to perform an alignment to replace a steering shaft, only the steering wheel needs to be centered, or just checked if the shaft is indexed. Unless there is another reason to do an alignment, you are getting ripped off. FYI.

I have a question... what exactly does that rubber boot above the u-joint protect or cover? It seems that is there for looks. My truck started with stiff steering about a year ago. It is a 2008 but has only about 30000 miles on it. I have sprayed the crap out of the ujoint off and on since. It is getting to the point I have to replace it. I called Toyota parts and found it costs $382 (before tax). There is a Village Toyota Parts site on line where it is available for $167. Has anyone bought parts from them?
I think there should have been a recall or at least a TSB for it.

It isn't a rubber boot, the shaft is 100% metal. I think the section in question has something to do with crumpling in the event of impact.

The other night, being frustrated with this whole problem, posted a message on a few different Toyota Face Book sites. It read:
"When is Toyota going to do a recall or TSB for stiff steering in the intermediate steering shaft (with u-joint)? Many different years are doing it. Mine has 30000 miles and is doing it."
Yesterday I got a message from Toyota Canada, "We'd like to put you in touch with our Customer Relations Department. Can you please send you contact information including daytime phone number and email address to facebook@toyota.ca, so we can get in touch. Thanks."

I was told today by http://www.villagetoyotaparts.com/ the STEERING INTERMEDIATE, SHAFT NO.2. I need is part no. 4520304020 according to my vin. It is listed on their site at $167.30. It says manufacturer is Toyota so I assume this is a genuine Toyota part. My dealer wants $382.

So just to follow up. I got my intermediate steering shaft replaced under warranty. The invoice for the work doesn't show any of the cost detail. I've seen the part listed on line for right around $170. I talked to the mechanic that did the work and asked what caused the failure. He said a plastic cap on the ujoint had failed and allowed dirt/water to get into the joint. Also asked how difficult this job was. He said it was not difficult but noted he had to apply penetrating fluid to get the hardware loose.

Just for the part. and then add tax to it, it would be $440 before installation.
