changed rear diff oil concern

just changed my rear diff oil in my 07 toyota tacoma 4wd non lsd used 3 quarts royal purple

$30 75w 90 Synthetic Gear Lube - 1 Quart (Pack of 2)

75w 90,

as i was adding in the last quart of oil i got about 3/4q done then all of a sudden the oil started leaking out from the refill plug i have about 1/4q more to put in

i made sure to drain all the oil out drove for about an hr before i did this oil change and when removed the fill plug no oil leak out

so im not sure if i put to much oil in it or it did not have enough oil in it the first place also i have a 3inch lift on my truck too could that be the reason also

any input would be much helpful

 

Fill to drain hole... plug it... drive around the block... re-check and add if needed!

 

If you drained the oil for that long then the oil drained from the axle and everything. It takes a while for the oil to work it's way out through the axle again. Seal it, leave it to sit for about 30 minutes and try again, I'll bet it will take that last 1/2 quart then

The same thing happened to me with my front differential not that long ago.

This is unexpected, because the front diff doesn't have axle volume.

 

I know, it actually really surprised me also. It took about an extra 1/3 quart.

 

OP - Since you're lifted, are you running rear axle shims to rotate your pinion up? If so, that means your diff fill hole is rotated down a little bit. This reduces the amount of oil the diff will receive before the oil begins to drain out of the fill hole. I had shims in the past and had to park on a decline in order to get all three quarts in.

 

^You could always pour through the breather fitting.
