Great write up, I'll admit that I practically copied your bracket design, and am very happy with the result... and actually have the same axe too lol....
Thanks again for a great idea!photo7_zps173a74ac_630a866c3e0db9be2de3f11dc3f968d88d820688.jpg

Do it! There's no reason not to

NP! Glad you found it useful!

 That's the reason I did the write-up - so others can do the same thing for cheap :D

    Looks good man

Thanks Biscuits! Let me know if you have any questions

 Not sure how much it will help with that...I just recently re-organized all my gear (tool bags, recovery tote, recovery bag, SAR bugout bag).

It was a 3-hour event, no joke :smash:

I literally have nothing to do tomorrow night or Saturday or hell for that matter sunday so I'm getting my shit organized. My entire truck is getting all my stuff taken out and then decided on whether or not to put it back in. I'll be building a rack that bolts in the toolbox that can be removed and bolted to my fourwheeler rack so I can take my tools with me if need be!

I welded together these hi-lift mounts a few weeks ago:

I store the foot of the jack in the cab so it can mount tight against the bed.

Thanks, I used some 1/4" thick aluminum plates I had laying around, they are a bit larger than the mounts. So far the non-locking wingnuts are staying on there tight, but if I find they get loose then I'll use some nylon locking nuts. I didn't even think to mount the jack foot somewhere on the jack, maybe I'll try that. I'm teaching myself tig welding so the whole project was a lot of fun.

    Thanks,
I went out and had a look at my girlfriends 06, and now I see that is standard for a 2nd gen truck,
You are right it unistrut would be stronger, it is just so much wider. The main bar on a hi lift is more like a piece of 2" x 3/8 web I beam. strong as all get out.
Looks to me like that bed rail track would be pretty handy for other uses, as long as you could get hardware for it- maybe Fastenal would carry such a thing?
Time to get out some catalogs...
    Thanks again

Thanks for the link. Upon closer inspection those factory rails do look pretty sturdy. Might work pretty good in a 1st gen. Also contemplating using 3/4" deep unistrut along the rails and maybe trying some unistrut right angle brackets and some 1-5/8" unistrut to support a temp sleeping platform while I get some designing done on the final product.

Well I pulled the trigger on some 2nd gen rails yesterday for a fair price, so they might be the first step. I may use them on the 85, We'll see. Have to track down the hardware and give it all a close look before going with unistrut. I know it would be hell for stout with unistrut but necessary? I'll have to see if it might be better to just build a platform.
