So i've been driving my new 2013 automatic V6 double cab sport tacoma for about 2.5 weeks now and when it shifts into fifth gear there is a noticeable bump. To explain better it is most noticeable at lower rpms. If i'm traveling on a 45 mph road i'm not gunning it to get to that speed and i'm light on the gas pedal so when I get to about 40 mph there is a, in my opinion, rough shift. I don't feel it in any of the gears except fifth. Sometimes I even hear what sounds like a small chirp along with the rough shift into fifth. If I get on it like when i'm getting up to speed on the interstate I still feel it but it doesn't seem to be as bad at the higher rpm. Shifting into all other gears except fifth is smooth. Is anyone else having this problem? Anyone think I may possibly have an issue? Thanks for the input.

I don't have this problem. Personally I would take it to a dealer ASAP before it has a chance to do damage to your tranny. If the dealer says its normal have them take you in a new one to see if it does the same thing.

my 2013 off road auto v6 shifts smooth.
The only thing I have is the slight vibe when I stomp on it which is well documented here.
Dealer service trip is my suggestion too.
I noticed little nuiances with all the trucks I drove before I bought.
Settle on the one that felt the best.
good luck post back what they say.

I've had my 2013 for about a month now and have around 1600ish miles on it so far.

I am actually impressed with how well and how firm the auto trans in my 13 Taco shifts.

Sorry to hear yours doesn't shift well and I too would be making and Appt. to have a Toyota tech. check it out.

    Appointment made for 7am tommorrow

Thats the thing though. I agree i'm not really pushing the truck when accelerating. I don't do 0-45 in 0.02 seconds like I see a lot of people doing. I just easy up to my driving speed. I did the same in my 01 tacoma. Kind of followed the keeping it under 2000 rpms rule. This truck pretty much stays under that number but like I said even when I get on the interstate and I am pushing it I still feel the bump into fifth. Maybe its just me being paranoid but I feel like something is off.

I have this exact same problem on my 2012. Up here in Alberta it is very noticeable when the temps are well below freezing. When getting up to speed and letting it ease into 5th, it's a noticeable clunk. Regardless of whether I'm letting it 'fall' into 5th, I don't think this should be happening period on a brand new vehicle. I've yet to take it into the dealer as I just haven't had time, but please post back with what they tell you, I'm very interested to hear what they have to say.

My wife's MkZ had a very similar issue and it was MUCH more pronounced when you were letting off the throttle a little as it shifted into high gear. I'll call it high gear because I can't recall if hers is a 5 or 6 speed auto trans.

Fortunately for me one of my best friends is a Ford/Lincoln/Mercury Tech and he told me there was a new flash that my wife's car hadn't received yet. After he did the flash it cured any and all shifting irregularities. Hopefully, your Taco will be that easily fixed.

Took a service tech for a ride then dropped it off this morning. We'll see what happens from there.

Got the answer I figured I'd get they basically think i'm not driving it hard enough. So I guess I'll start pushing it a little more and see how it goes. Gonna try to drive another truck when I go over there to get it and see what happens.

My 2012 does the same thing.

    1. it has to be cold. Meaning truck not completely warmed up and a cold day.

    2. I am not sure what gear, but I have noticed it around the 50-60 km/h mark.

    3. I notice it when I am just humming along at low rpms.

That I think basically sums it up. Mine is switching into 5th gear between 35-40 mph's. If I push the truck a little more to get the rpms up then I shouldn't have the problem. Guess I have to change the way I drive. So used to my 01 tacoma and how it drove I guess this one is just going to take some getting used to.

Well, not the response I was looking for either. I see no reason whatsoever that an auto tranny in any 2012 vehicle should shift into any gear with the slightest of clunks. Disappointing...

I drive mine in "4" instead of "D" unless im on the highway. Lugging the engine around town is no good for it. I think its actually stated in the owners manual to only use "D" for highway travel.

Your truck lugs in "D" while under normal driving conditions in the city??

Are you sure this suggestion is in the owner's manual??
