Like Workman said, 1/2 quart extra isn't that big of a deal. If you want it to be right, get underneath with a drain pan and loosen the plug until it drips or dribbles. Just enough for oil to come out but not enough to take it off. Hang on to the plug the whole time., it's a fine line between the two. Carefully let some out until it drops to the correct level. If it's your only vehicle you might want to go buy a couple extra quarts just in case the plug comes off and you drop it. Not a big deal and congrats on your first oil change. The next one will be a piece of cake!

Ok man, thanks, it makes me feel better that it isn't going to totally screw up my engine. I most probably will just leave it and maybe some will burn off or something. Next oil change I should just do 5.5, correct? It's not like its Ferrari. It's a 4cyl pickup truck. Not a ton of money in the scheme of things.

You live and you learn. Just hope you don't crash and burn!!

If you are really concerned about getting it spot on, another option would be to unscrew the filter, dump out what oil is in there, screw it back on and be done with it.

I believe Workman's solution is much better than the one I suggested! ;)

No I'm not a perfectionist or anything, but I just don't want to be buying a new engine in three months. If its not that big a deal, I'll just wait til next time.

It's not going to kill your engine, but of course the correct level is best. Is the oil level above the full mark more than half the distance between add and full? Half the distance between add and full would be approx 1/2 quart.

I've overfilled on accident before, but it was on older engines that I knew would leak or burn it in a few weeks anyways. On a better engine I'd take the time to get the correct level rather than running it that way for 6 months or whatever.

ETA: And yes, ignore the guys with odd tools.

I've noticed that too!! Toyota needs to better the whole oil change thing on these trucks. The right amount of oil in the manual, a better dipstick, and an easier place to get to the oil filter on the 2.7 engine. That thing was tough to get to.

If you do plan on pulling the oil filter do yourself and your truck a favor and buy a Toyota oil filter and throw the Fram in the trash.

    Too many to list now.
Then go buy a royal purple. Best oil filters out there.

But why is it overfilled if the manual says I put less than the actual capacity. That's what is driving me crazy. Maybe the dipstick isn't right and the book is right. Ever thought of that???

They're fine, but not worth the extra cost.

OEM is by far the best bang for the buck.

You never actually drain out ALL of the oil. The capacity is for a dry freshly built engine. Lots of little nooks and crannies in there that can hold up to 1/2 qt. Damn I'm getting old, I just said nooks and crannies!

I also believe the Toyota OEM is the best filter to get.
