6 Spd Tranny Noise w/ Clutch Pedal Out

]Im curious if other people here with the 6 speed have the whirring noise from the tranny while the clutch pedal is up and goes away while pushed down. It is not the same sound that other people have experienced with the squeaky/chirp noise. This noise has been going on since I bought the truck new. May be completely normal, just want to see if others have the same noise or not.

Really don't think that is normal, not sure what would cause that. Have you taken it to the dealership and asked them?

Interestingly enough, the throw-out bearing can make noise either pushed in, or when released. However I know that there has been an issue with the TOB and input shaft housing, and I am sure someone here has the link to the thread that discusses it, as well as the fix.

I've read quite a few of the topics on here about that issue that your speaking of. It seems that those problems had different noises, more like squeak and chirp sounds. Mine has been doing this whirring whining noise since the day I bought it off the lot. Just thought it was normal. Has about 40k miles now. I'm not saying it isn't a problem with the TOB, it may or may not be. I'm curious if this is a common operating noise with other trucks or if its isolated to mine.

And no I haven't had it to the dealer for this yet. I wanted to feel around and see if others do this or not. I'm starting to feel like a dealership troll for having it in there to get all the TSBs done.

Well mine is an 08' and it had 92k when I bought it from a dealer and mine does the exact same thing as yours. I noticed mine in the drive through one morning. There is defiantly a TOB issue. However, with mine being way over mileage I am just babying mine till I can upgrade it...I would take yours to the dealer just to see what they say..maybe you can squeeze a new clutch outta them

Mine only does it when it's really cold out. Been like that since I got it.
I think you should take it in and let them have a listen.

And don't feel like a troll! You are an informed consumer, nothing wrong with that. If the dealership doesn't like it tell them to complain to toyota, it's not your problem.

Does it sound like a growling noise, similar to a wheel bearing? If so, you still COULD be looking at a TOB. Remember when your clutch is pressed in, ALL of the force of the pressure plate is being pressed against the bearing.

Mine's made this noise since I bought my truck. I thought it was a problem so I got the dealership to replace the TOB under warranty. A month after replacement the whirring noise came back, more so when it's cold in the morning. I don't think it's an issue, many people with the manual transmission have this.

for me, best i can recall, i first noticed it after 5000km and the first use of 4wd. thats what made it stand out. now at 17k kms and about the same really.

They all do it it's normal neutral gear rattle there is a lot of stuff turning in neutral. As soon as you push the clutch in every thing stops turning.

Definitely not a growling noise, literally just a whirring noise.

In neutral the input shaft is the only thing turning when the clutch is released.

i/ve never driven anything that didnt make noise in neutral with clutch out. harder to notice while driving. if these trucks had a neutral option for t-case, you could row through the gears and really hear a racket. i chalk it up to unloaded chatter.

check your fluid level to be sure, and drive the hell out of it

Bought mine with 40K on it and the noise that you describe. In the 25K since, the throwout bearing was replaced due to chirping. The whirring noise in neutral has remained the same. The regional rep who approved the clutch work told me it is normal for the six speed to make audible noise in neutral.

+ the countershaft's gears for 1st and 2nd.

My truck has a little gear noise from the box when spinning in neutral as well. Push the clutch, it goes away. I have the TSB fork and TOB fwiw.

I've yet to find a manual gearbox that doesn't make that low grrrrrrsh sound in neutral. Even my Fit with its highly-praised incredibly reliable 5 speed did it when I picked it up from the dealer with 7 miles on its odometer. Actually, that one was louder than the Tacoma's. I bet it was built like my old noisy d-series tranny with the 3/4 shift hub on the countershaft and spun those freewheeling gears good and fast. Didn't help that Honda's idea of gear lube was friction-modified 5w20 either.

Nope you got 2 counter shafts turning also. Diesel cars/trucks use a dual mass flywheel because the gear rattle is very noticeable with out it due to the high compression. I replaced the DMF in my TDI with a single mass when it when south and if you think the Tacoma is noisy in neutral the VW sounded like a concrete mixer.
