I think you can get it on an SR5. I would also go with the automatic over the stick in the new tacos. It seems to have less issues and get as good or better mpg.

I have spent so much time looking at these builds and stuff and man I tell you what the old man's build (old bus driver) is what I want but I'm white. If you haven't looked at his build man it's awesome

    OK,

one major reason you may need TRD Offroad, is the locking rear diff

and I will tell you why. If this doesn't apply, then forget it

say you have nice cargo, like an appliance, or big glass windows, or you
just want to be 100% sure not to ding the truck...

most dirt road obstacles, or off road slips, can be pushed through with
a little more throttle. But if you have cargo you might not want to risk
knocking it around, or slipping and slamming the truck, denting some paint

the e-locker allows one to: creep very slowly up a trail in normal mode, and when
she stops due to a tire or two slipping in place, you have the option
of locking the rear, and then most of the time you can just engage it and
continue creeping forward with minimal fuss. cargo protected.

I haul glass doors and windows up skidder roads once in a while and the locker
saves me any headaches. There are always three spots that I will slip because
I am going 1 mph in the first place and have no speed. so wet stumps and rocks
just stop me. I could easily back up 1-5 feet and hit it at 3mph or more, but with
glass I don't want to. hit the locker, wiggle it a tad so the locker engages, and
sure enough I either just start moving forward again, or the ass end creeps left
or right until it finds grip and I go forward. No need to try to increase speed and possibly
break the windows I haul....perfect real-world use example...

TRD off road has a-trac system which almost eliminates needing a locking diff, but
having the live axle in the rear as an option is the best possible system you can get without
modding the truck. Why buy a Tacoma without 'Turd OR' when it's full set of legs is a package away ?

That makes sense. I don't see myself in that position but who knows, I have about 9 months to decide, I just want to make sure I know everything I can about it.

You can add an ARB air locker to an sr5 for about 1600, which is a lot less than the additional price of an OR. Does the exact same thing.

Again, the price difference goes much further aftermarket.

the price difference for trd is just for convenience, it makes more since to do the modifications yourself for cheaper. just my opinion though
