    Story:
Went to Rausch Creek and did some wheeling yesterday. Had no issues in terms of noise. Drive home from rausch, no issues. Drive back to school (to NY from MD) the next day, I developed a significant whine from somewhere.

    Symptoms:
-It's speed dependent. The faster I go, the higher pitched and quicker the whine.
-It occurs in neutral, at idle, in 2wd and 4wd
-It sound being created is sort of the sound of a supercharger or when you go in reverse really fast

    Truck:
    -07 TRD Sport
    -85k miles
-Can't remember if I've had diff or trans fluid flushed/replaced

    Ideas?

I've got a slight whine, myself. but it doesn't happy in neutral or when I'm not on the gas. It's weird. Hope you get yours figured out. Free bump.

There's a lot of talk about the idler pulley bearings not being water tight. Did you go mudding? If it does it in neutral and increases with rpm, I'd be looking at the front of the engine real close. Maybe pop the belt off and run briefly to see if it goes away.

Well my front end spent about 15 mins in a 3 foot deep puddle (water was over the front tires). I'll look into that. Thanks!

I've also got a whine at about 60 pressing lightly on the gas. When I let off the throttle or press all the way down it goes away. (2012 5 speed regular cab).

Yup. One of my No. 2 idler pulleys had gone bad.

    FJPulleys_6d018c2b182a94dd2f4647ee160bdbd74b456a2a.jpg

In this diagram, it was the pulley closest to the power steering pump. I'm replacing all of the idler pulleys to make sure this doesn't happen again. People seem to have gripes with the OEM pulleys from Toyota, and they're freakin expensive.

I ordered 3 pulleys made by Gates. 2x #36173 and 1x #36174. Should fix the issue.

Just wanted to let anyone know that might also ever run across this problem that these gates pulleys are much quieter and definitely solved the issue I was having. The engine is running quieter then I can remember.

this is good info. I too sat around in a mud hole for a while waiting to get pulled out and had a nasty whine. I replaced the pulleys and it got back to "normal" but was still noticeably whiny (and getting worse the more I hit mud & water). may have to check into those pulleys in the future

I think I'm having the same issue. I'm noticing the dying whale sound which I assumed was my power steering pump. My steering functions just fine and my fluid levels are perfect. I also did a power steering flush last year so the fluid is relatively new.

My noise also happens in neutral when the car is stopped as well as moving so I'm 100% sure it's isolated to either the pump or the pulley system.

Nope. It was in the 20s and I had no garage. Parts were like ~$110 and labor was around $150.

Stupid ? but does dropping the belt to narrow down a sound, ruin the engine in anyway? I know that it shouldnt, but Ill ask anyway..

I'm suffering from the same whine, and looking at the diagram above its from the same No. 2 pulley as the OP's. Guess its time to replace!

For those that have done this themselves, is it hard??

    Thanks!

EDIT: Here's a decent thread on TTora

It's pretty easy. You just need a pulley puller.

Good deal, Autozone or the like probably have these for rent I would think.

    Thank you for the info!

I have done it on other vehicles. It should be fine if the water temp is still cold. I wouldn't do it on a fully warmed up engine.

Check this link out. I think you might have posted the wrong torque on idlers. You might have them mixed up.
